This 1897 cent is the currently the piece I have for my type set. It is PCGS graded PR-66 Brown.

OK, folks, it’s Sunday the 25th, and now we move into the Lincoln cents.
The first subtype we’ll encounter is of course the Lincoln Cent VDB (1909). As you know, this one-year type featured the initials of designer Victor David Brenner below the wheat ears on the reverse.
My 1909 VDB cent is rather special because it has an interesting if not especially well known pedigree.
This coin was given to me by Josh Zachman, from an original roll saved by his great-grandfather Leroy Zachman in 1909. Leroy Zachman was an Ohio banker and also an avid collector. His signature appears on banknotes of the early 20th century.
A number of original mint-fresh coin rolls he saved before WW1 are in the hands of Josh and his other descendants. As such, this coin has a known, unbroken provenance dating all the way back to the time it was issued in 1909. I was pleased with the grade it received at PCGS.

Here’s mine. The photographer who shot the composite photo shows great detail and accurate color, but did not capture the luster of the coin in hand, so that photo is followed by two from the seller.

The price of these coins in Gem Mint State (MS-65 or better) has really gone up over the last 30 years. When I started my coin dealer business in the mid 1990s, these coins were available raw for $10 each. That was retail at the shows. Now it's a few hundred depending on the size of the grading number on the slab.

From the megahoard. Over the years I bought up a half dozen old collectors’ hoards—some with no Memorial Cents—they contained at least one of the keys except for the SVDB. I have filled many albums and sold many cents.
I forgot that this urchin showed up in the 1909 S slot of an old Whitman folder from eBay. I can’t find it now.
@lordmarcovan had messaged me, letting me know he would occasionally be “absent”, and asked me to start the next coin on his behalf when this occurred.
So for today, Monday January 26th, we continue with the original Lincoln set design, bronze, with the wheat heads (“ears” or “stalks”) on the reverse. But DON’T show a “Steel” cent, as that will be a separate Type, for Tuesday. However, if you want, you CAN show a 1909 Lincoln cent, from any mint, as long as it doesn’t have VDB on the lower reverse!

So yes, today, January 26th, we are doing the Lincoln Cent Bronze Wheat Heads (1908-1958), excluding, of course, the 1943 steel cents, which will be our next type.
I might as well share one of my best cherrypicks. Found this in a bulk Wheat cent lot I bought right here on BST, back in 2006. Since I had commingled a couple of different lots before sorting them, I’m not sure who I sourced it from, or I’d have thrown him a bone.
So I essentially paid five cents or less for this coin. Later sold it for $700-ish after PCGS graded it XF40.
When I found it in the bag, there was a little piece of dirt hiding the mintmark. I was initially happy enough finding an XF 1914 alone, but when I removed that speck of gunk with a toothpick and saw that “D” underneath, I let out a shout that awoke my sleeping wife!

I like what people do to cents. I enjoy the cents afflicted with someone’s anxiety or artistry. I’ve tortured cents all my life. We pitched them in school, caused trainwrecks, gleaned them from the return of coke bottles, why, they even called a shoe after it.

I have owned a couple of MS67 coins in the past, but never an MS68, because I never thought the exponential leap in price between 67 and 68 was worth it. (Even if I'd had the money for an MS68, I wouldn't have gone there.)

I feel the same way about the MS68 pricing, but I went for the MS67+, lol. My coin, from the Denver mint, is more plentiful than those from Philly or San Francisco, so the price is somewhat lower.

This is one of my favorite coins for a very simple reason……it used to reside in my grandfather’s type set album.
I’m almost certain he got this from circulation when he was a kid. He loved coins for coins but never had much of a “coin budget”.
Probably the only steel cent I’ll ever own…….
