The Collaborative "Virtual 7070" Type Set Project

Hi. Per a suggestion by @creg, I'm starting another group participation thread. He wanted to create a "virtual collection" where we'd all work on the same set together- virtually. I suggested the ever-popular Dansco 7070 Type set.
Here's how it works. Each day will be devoted to a slot in the album (one particular type, in other words), and we'll do them in order. So on the first day we'll all post pictures of our Draped Bust half cents, on the second day we'll all post our Classic Head half cents, then we'll do Braided Hair half cents on the third day, and then on to the Draped Bust Large cent, and so on. Get the idea?
There are 83 types to complete the album.
Each day we can award unofficial bragging rights to the person who posts the nicest coin, and also to the person who posts the nastiest coin. Anything from junk to Gems is OK, as long as it is of the correct type and has a readable date.
Ready? Let's go!

I'll start with our first type slot in the album: the Draped Bust half cent (1800-1808).
Here's mine. Post yours! Then we'll all do the Classic Head half cent tomorrow.

Cool idea!
Here’s my DB 1/2c.
PS- everybody try to post both sides of your coin, if you can.
You never know- at the end, someone might get ambitious and want to create a virtual album of all the best coins shared, or something.
(That person won't be me, though.)

May I suggest one a day is too fast, maybe one a week?
Dunno? What do y’all think? Maybe one a day is too fast, but at one per week, do we really wanna drag this out over 83 weeks?

I collected the Draped Bust half cents by die variety until the early 1990s. I had four varieties left. All of them were rare, and I knew the collectors who owned almost all of them. They would not be selling any time soon.
I bought this 1800 at the FUN show, my first 2026 purchase. This piece has a reverse that was made, but used in the 1790s. That makes it special to me.
This 1804 Spiked Chin Half Cent was the first of four varieties with the spike. I believe that the reverse was cracked by the object (a screw?) which caused the spike.
The 1806 half cent with the large 6 and stems is a hoard variety. In the early 1900s, the Chapman brothers who were Philadelphia coin dealers had a hoard of these in Mint State. This is one of them.
The 1807 half cent is fairly common, but most of them were made with an obverse die that did not show the dentiles. This early die state piece is worth a strong premium because it has them.
I no longer own this 1805 half cent, which is the scarce Small 5, Stems variety. All of the examples I have seen of this scrarce variety have swelling in the obverse field. The die obviously failed early on. There was some confusion about this variety many years ago because the early editions of the Red Book had the wrong coin pictured. There two minor varieties of this Red Book listed variety. The other one is rare with less than 20 examples known. I owned an example at one time.

Nastiest?
@BillJones Hoard or not, that 1806 is a special coin. I've followed your posts for years and do not recall your posting it before. Thanks for sharing it here.
Thank you!
It is graded MS-62 Brown and is the Draped Bust half cent for my type set.
It's been claimed that the Chapman brothers had a keg of 1806 half cents. I don't think they had that many of them, which would work out a thousands of Mint State pieces, but they certainly had a few hundred.
Another nameless hoard had to have existed of the 1804 Plain 4 Stemless half cents. There are many which are Mint State or very close to it. Most of them are all brown, however, with no red.
Thanks, Rob, for starting the thread. My ideas were less interesting.
Already, I see how good this thread is for my education. Thank you guys for posting and writing about your coins.
I hope that the pace is appropriate. Please keep adding.

@Creg and I seem to agree that a one-per-week timetable would risk slowing down the thread at the risk of stalling it.
Let’s stick to the one-type-per-day timetable.
If that proves too fast and 83 days is over too quickly, there’s always the option of doing it again, slower, or doing a whole new collection at the slower pace.

It was nice until the bear got a hold of it.
If we were all the same, the world would be an incredibly boring place.

Welcome to Thursday, everyone. It is now time to focus on the Classic Head half cent (1809-1835).
The only coin of this type I presently own is a holed example, in my casual "Holey Basic 19th Century Type Set" corkboard collection.
Here is a picture of the corkboard collection from last January. I think the only coins I lack now are the Barber Half, the Seated Dollar With Motto, and the Trade Dollar. (Oh, and I can't remember offhand if I bought a holey 20-cent piece yet or not.) So as we play along with this virtual 7070 type set, I'll be falling back on my holey collection for the types I don't have nice examples of.

That’s OK- I won’t be here for every day’s type, either. Hopefully others will keep the next type going each day when I’m away.

Well, just got back from a show in Wilmington, DE and picked this up for my type set. Iam getting disappointed ion Trueviews, they are not looking as good as the coin in hand
I’m a bit “late to the game”, so I missed out on yesterday’s Draped Half Cent, but apparently I’m just in time for today’s Classic Head Half Cent.
I call this my “Ash Wednesday” Half Cent, lol. I bought this as a MS64RD with CAC, and liked it so much, I returned it to PCGS for Reconsideration. Sure enough, despite the carbon spot, they added on a plus (nice bump in value at this MS64+RD grade level).

It is now time for the Braided Hair half cent (1849-1857). Also called the Coronet half cent.
I have a holey example as part of my corkboard collection, but no picture of that. You’d probably rather see the unholed example in my primary collection anyway.

If you missed a day, message me. We’ll edit your coin into a place holder post like this.

Cool idea for a thread.
Man, seeing a full RD example is impressive!

This 1835 half cent should have made MS-64, Brown. It didn't, and I'm still underwater with it financially 30 years latter.
Here's the best of my Braided Hair Half Cents.
And here's the end of the trail. It's the last one, dated 1857.
I paid $16 for this one in the mid 1960s. Back then it was graded "EF." Today it's in an MS-62 holder. It cost me more to have it graded and than what I paid for it.
And this 1809, which is still raw, is just very nice. I bought this one in an EAC convention auction. It was graded MS-60, Brown.
This is in my 7070. I got it because it had the initials of myself and my wife.

OK, everybody, that concludes the half cents, and now it’s time to move into the cents, specifically the large cents.
Our first large cent in a Dansco 7070 album is the Draped Bust large cent (1796-1807).
Much as I love this type, I do not presently own a decent one in my collection, though I’ve had some in the past.
Currently all I have is this holed 1798 in my holey corkboard collection.
Let me also share this amazingly well-preserved 1798 Sheldon-166 cent that was dug by my local detecting Buddy, Billy R.
Several 1798 S-166 coins have been found in this local area, for some reason. The prominent reverse die crack is the notable feature of this variety.

Here are two more I owned in the past. I’ve never owned a problem-free example higher than VF, though I’ve had some “details” coins up into the XF- to AU-details range.

My first, a 1798 2nd Hair. S-174 I believe. At the time I bought it, it was the most expensive coin I owned

My second and only other. I picked this coin out from a lot of Braided Hair large cents. 1803 Small Date Small Fraction. S-263. Only the tops of "03" have survived from wear and damage
