The “first design” per George Morgan
Morgan said "this die with the deep serratures inserted by hand and with the feathers of the eagle's wing continued on the under edge of the body was the first model, and that subsequently, in deference to the idea and wishes of the Committee on Coinage, changed the arrangement of the feathers so as to leave a gap in the under edge between the feathers and the body."

Just added today:
This is #7 added to my set of 12. Really nice example without the CAM contrast the others have. However, it’s one of only 2 J-202’s known with excessive reverse die polishing not seen on other 5 leaf examples. This reverse is also found on a copper example of J-208! Rare piece, also with EEPS.

Former Pattern:
It’s widely believed 1000 pieces were produced & issued for this “J-228”. Today this Shield Reverse 1859 is no longer considered a pattern, but rather part of the regular issue IHC’s. While 1000 coins is a minuscule number, it’s too many to believe the Mint’s intent was for it to be a Pattern cent. Its inclusion in the Red Book confirms this.

This is a token. Not quite sure if this post is appropriate or applicable to this thread. I'm told this might have been some type of pattern or test piece for other tokens. You be the judge.

During WW2, because of the metal shortages, makers of common tokens were forced to use obsolete tokens to strike new tokens on.
