The Durango eagle is, after the Hookneck, the most beautiful eagle in all of Mexican coins. The third place would be the one in the 20 gold pesos in the XX century, but not close.
I was very excited to win this 1813 Suprema Junta half real earlier in the week! It is absolutely one of my favorite types and is really well struck for the issue. The registries for both NGC and PCGS seem to need some updating, as it is listed under Zacatecas and the populations are combined between this issue and the SJNG type.
Curious to see if anyone else picked up anything from the JBR Collection?
I know it is not Thursday, but last night had one of those surprises while browsing eBay (something that I do every day as I am sure many of you do too). Anyway, I found a Durango 10 pesos 1873/2. All 10 pesos from the Republic are rare (NGC has graded a little over 400 for all dates and mints) and while this is not the rarest (about a dozen coins graded) could be a decade before I see another one. The price was reasonable, so I bought it. I do not think the coin was available but a couple of hours and already had a large number of people that had it in their watch list (in fact when I bought it eBay told me that 2 other people had it in their shopping cart)... So here it is:
The only thing that was not right was timing as Stacks has a rather interesting auction of Mexican coins tomorrow so I dent my funds a bit. But I just could not let it go.
That table that @pruebas copied is the living proof of how rare Republic gold is. Sure you can always find a half escudo on eBay, just remember that there are nearly 100 combinations of year, assayer, mint for the half escudo and you have 915 coins graded... comes to 9 coins per type (of course this is just an average)! Try comparing to Morgan dollars!

I agree. And it makes sense it’s French.

@Abuelo I agree with you. That’s why I’ve always liked 4E and G2.5P! Ideally, we should add the PCGS pops to these for a more accurate picture.
I recently had to restrain myself from pulling the trigger on an 8E with the beautiful French eagle.
That’s quite nice @Abuelo an overdate to boot!

That said, please do not start collecting Mexican gold... it is hard enough already! 😄😄😄
