Anyone else taking some time off from buying?

In my case I have to pay the tax man for the next 8-12 months or more (property taxes + income taxes + school taxes). So will be taking some time off buying and save a little each month. Looking forward to been able to buy again on a regular basis sometime in 2026. Sucks but it is what it is when you are not a rich person.

    I have made a serious effort to stop buying for a while, I am saving up for an auction in a few weeks and only buying exceptional deals and cherry picked varieties.

    I have cut back on coin purchases quite a bit in the past two years vs the prior 15+ years. I see more selling and even less buying in my future.

    I have 2 coins I would make an exception and buy if I can but that is it. Both are not expensive (a few hundred each max). Both rarely ever show up for sale could be years between sales or longer.

    Other than a little silver from the mint, i only bought one coin this year. Nothing really stands out right now for me.
    With the summer FUN show next weekend (I've only been to the Michigan state shows) and the release of the 2025 high relief gold creeping up, I'll probably wait until after I get the high relief. Unless something really catches my eye.

    Throw a coin enough times, and suppose one day it lands on its edge.

    There is only one coin I see now I am planning to buy. Otherwise, I actually hope nothing else comes up that I really want in my primary collection but if it does, I will consider it.

    I stopped upgrading a couple of years ago, so went from buying a lot of coins every year to buying very few.

    I don't see that changing. I enjoy the chase for a particular coin that has struck my fancy, and I'm happy to wait many months between purchases. I have only bought two coins this year (but what coins they were!), and I expect to buy two more before the end of the year.

    It's a different kind of fun, and it's silly for me to be spending a huge amount of money every year on coins, at my age.

    I am trying, since completing my die variety + die state early dollar set. But I pushed myself into doing the St. Gaudens set now, getting close the halfway. So I guess spending will continue.

    "Afford" is a relative term. My coin budget comes out of what's left after I pay myself first. Recently been spending more on travel. I've almost never taken funds out of savings to buy a coin and don't intend to do that for the foreseeable future.

    It comes down to what I am seeking and what is out there. I have been working quite a bit on finishing graded uncirculated sets from 1934 through 1943. I have several in 1934 still needed, a couple in 1935, one in 1936 and one in 1942 left to go, but right now I am not actively looking. I just finished a complete set of graded proofs 1942 through 1998 with a 1951 Franklin Half Dollar, so I am enjoying that accomplishment and admiring the coins.

    I have cut back on purchases of coins that I don't really need for my collection even if they are cool. (i.e. Rainbow Toned Morgan even though I collect Barber coinage)

    I finally got my Flowing Hair Dollar from Dangerous Dan early this year. Have bought all of three coins in the last ten years. There's very little I'm looking for re my type set, and these coins rarely show up, and are expensive.

    Put a new roof on the house last year, and this year, I'm taking a once in a lifetime trip this fall. Three years ago, a king penguin actually walked up to me and introduced itself. No fear. Have a big pic in my office. Can only have experiences like that in person, and that's if you're very lucky.

    I almost never buy graded coins and when I do I almost always lose. I am infatuated at making coins, moderns because they’re the easiest. After 8 years I finally come to realize that I’m not a collector and never have been.

    My driving force has always been about profit. I couldn’t care less about looking at a coin for very long. And after all the stories about what to do with my collection before I die and the heirs and so forth coupled with the fast emerging crypto market and my wins sitting there collecting dust the decision to sell everything was very easy.

    I will continue to make modern wins as I do enjoy the process and the challenge but will quickly convert to crypto for my retirement and/or kids whichever comes first. Now let’s pray I never lose the keys.

    I'll pass with a similar situation, and it's likely I will if I can even find the coin. As much as I like my primary interest, I'd rather not complete it.
