Peru 2 reales 1752 (first milled 2 reales since a 1751 has yet to be seen):

Mintage = 208

Many coins from Latin America are holed they were carried on ropes and some time sowed into clothing (usually has more than 1 hole).

Mintages for the 2 reales 1753-1772 range from 37 000 to 270 000.

I had to look that up... These two are leading contenders in my collection according to Coinfacts:
1796 Flowing Hair LC- mintage- 109,825
    1797 Half-Cent- mintage- 127,840

I also have a 1796 8R Mexico City... not sure where to find mintages on that...

    What does this number represent?

    What does this number represent?

It represents how many proofs were minted that year in that date. The 1916 proof Buffalo nickel is the rarest nickel of the series. Only 600.

The bitterness of "Poor Quality" is remembered long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.

Oh, okay. Got it @crazyhounddog thanks!

It may start with the quantity minted and then trickles down into surviving population… but it further boils down to the quality of the state of preservation for that surviving population.

Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.

Survival rates are tough to be exact (in most cases) with as you guys know.

I'm sure most of us here understand that, but survival rates can be static and often just estimates. I would hate to have been the owner of the top pop 1857-s $20 prior to the late 80's :'( .

  • Lovely coins Clacka. All of you, great coinage. Reno those are some great 1 centers. Such an elegant design.

Good for you and thanks to all for sharing.. I'm certainly no expert but I get the hold collecting has on guys. I only stack metal as an excuse to collect a bit. But I do love looking at pictures of numismatic coinage and currencys.

In actuality I'm a History nut and coinage/currency is one of the vehicles I drive there with. :)

Mintage ~20, with two obverse dies! This and the Eliasberg coin are the only ones known with this obverse.

Hey, what country is that coin? It doesn't say anywhere on it. :p

Here is a regular issue 1858 Proof that I used to own. Think it used to be reported in some places as 80 minted but that is too low. PCGS CoinFacts shows an estimate of 100 issued even though they have 99 certifications alone. Looks like most auctions estimate 300 now. Apparently no official records to rely on.

    Mintage: 1

What makes it a mintage of one, the clip?

Do you know what it was struck over and how much the previous clipped changed if any?

I would think the overstrike would cause it to fill out a little more additional than the original coin.

All excellent questions @WinLoseWin! This might answer some of them. @dcarr might know the rest.

The Fairmont hoard was a wreck for the owners of top pop gold.
