That's a nice one Tim! I'm sure you are surprised by how much the VF30 of THAT date went for last night on GC, I know I sure am. I've got a soft spot for 1903 S quarters and here's one of my examples- PCGS VF35:

Shireman, Ducker, holy smokes @Eldorado9 Eldo! your killin' it with your collection!

1903-S, ok Jed! Sweet circulation-tone quality on yours. It has that slight brownish-tinge in hand? (asking because sometimes digital images can be deceiving).

This one has a slightly darker gray appearance as shown. I am surprised it got a plus grade actually:

    1903-S Barber Quarter PCGS XF45+

1903-S quarter would be a great choice.

I dont know, these, "P" dates are pretty special too! Now I just need to find a 96 to compete my mint state date set!

Did you win the 1896 MS66 at tonight's CAC Approved Coinage auction at HA?.

I did not, I was focused on the two above coins. I will have to start expanding my search I guess.

A nice recent article by Greg Reynolds considering MS64 and MS65 Barber Quarter coins:

If this link doesn't work, it is from CAC so you need to go there and search for the article.

The collection at CSNS was the #1 Everyman Barber Quarters in PCGS Forums (100%Swede) and I got to spend time with the son of the owner (inherited collection). The 1892-O that was purported to be a Branch Mint Proof didn't pan out so nothing new there. We encouraged the owner as best we could to keep looking for cool Barbers! His story for how he came to the coin was one of my show highlights making the coin special for other reasons.

Thank you Tim that means a lot,I put a strong bid on it early and it hung on to the end. It's a great feeling to get an AU semi-key Denver mint from 1911,a pretty good upgrade from my self submitted (raw) VF30-seeing it in hand when I opened it I was pleased with the amount of luster it has the reverse is an AU57 LOL real strong (full) wingtips very well struck...it will be hard (and expensive) to upgrade this AU53 I'm really happy with it.

@Redglobe, Those are a couple nice looking pickups! I really like that '11 D. If you get a chance show us the VF30 that you submitted too. I'm a big fan of those mid-grades, mainly for affordability reasons. :) As usual I'm in the shallow end of the pool, but I just received one that has a look that I like:

Just eliminate the 1896-S, 1901-S, 1913-S, and for good measure the 1909-O. With time and if you are lucky, the set in MS64 could be completed for just over $100,000. Think of it as spending $5,000 a year over 20 years. :)

    1911-D is a tough date! It's population rank in grades MS64 - MS66 is #10.

Nice ones Tim! Once you get started it's hard to stop isn't it? Here's one of my latest additions that I think came from @Redglobe - Rob was that one yours? By the way there sure was a lot of activity on ebay this last week with Barber quarters wasn't there? Seems to me that they brought pretty good prices as well.

Hard to stop? Stops happen automatically because there are really no tougher date XF's to purchase anymore.

Here is my latest NEWP. Puts me at 62% completed of the full set. The remainder of the set is going to be tough. I started it back in 2013! I still have some easier to find holes but most of the rest will be tough!

Here is my other XF45 for the 1903-P Barber Quarter, someone was asking (I won't mention names):

    1903-P Barber Quarter PCGS XF45
A somewhat antiquated holder for this one. #26647918. Provenance: Lenny Rizzo who was representing a consignment from about January 2021:

I collect multiples for variation reasons. For instance, compare the date placement of the two aforementioned Rizzo (2021) and Fortin (2025) coins:

    Rizzo 2021 More mid-centered.

    Fortin 2025 Lower-positioned

Here is a newp from GC. This coin doesn't image well in the older NGC holder. Although the obverse looks brown and dull, the coin actually is lighter in the fields and speaks to a higher grade. The 1905-O is a tougher coin for the Barber Quarter:

    1905-O Barber Quarter NGC XF45

The 1903 is also the scarcest P mint Barber Quarter

"The 1903 is also the scarcest P mint Barber Quarter" it is for total graded 330, it's also lowest in MS pop total of111,but for all the AU graded coins 1913 is the lowest

To add...the 1913 is second behind the 1903 in MS and that's a real nice coin BTW
Are you putting together an MS set?

As many of you know I loved to find raw Barbers and send them in for grading, seeking the holy grail AU 58 grade. Over a 20 year period I found 3 candidates and sent them to PCGS. They came back MS 62, 63, and 64. My collection settled for this AU 50 purchased in the current holder:

    I love them Barber Halves.....

Yes, one or two a year, a date set representing all mints. I like the flexibility - no 1896-S, 1901-S, 1909-0, and 1913-S for me.

That's really neat! A Type I and a Type II.

Have you discovered any other dates with different date placements for the date?

Here’s another 1903 date position (from my collection):

Similar to one Tim previously posted, but the orientation of the “1” to the Dentils is different.

So far we have Type I, Type II, and Type III. :) Actually, mine looks like Type IV. The "1" is high (like Type I) and between the Dentils.
