I'll be in the area for my grandson's graduation that week. I'll have to if I can escape for a few hours and head down for the show.

A definite maybe. Would like to see Mark and others and as I have said before, I would also like to see End of the Trail because of the respect I have for Fraser.

It will be interesting to see how it turns out in terms of dealer attendance, considering the head-scratching choice of location. Particularly so with overseas dealers, as they already pay a lot just to get to the States.

Grumble about the location all you want, but remember - as has been pointed out MANY MANY times...

    1. The city has to have managble sales tax rules (and not have things like the Javit's center's trade union rules)
    2. It has to be accessible in terms of air and road transport
    3. The convention center has to want the ANA convention
    4. The convention center has to have availability during the traditional NMS and WFoM show periods

    3 is the killer

We don't buy enough expensive hotel suites.
We don't buy enough catered banquet dinners.

Most conventions offer discounts on the space rental because the ancillary revenue covers the costs. In the case of the ANA, we have to pay "rack rates" for space rental.

2 is also tricky, because the center of gravity of the US dealer/collector population favors East and Midwest.

I’ll maintain connecting flights are not that big of a deal. I travel 35 weeks a year. If carrying the coins is too much hassle just come as a buyer dealer and carry on during your travel home.

Coins are meant to be a fun hobby. I’ve heard many dealers that don’t get as much time as they want with friends and walking the bourse…perfect venue for such if bringing your coins is prohibitive due to the connecting flight.

  • BarndogBarndog Posts: 20,509 ✭✭✭✭✭

one coin show a year for me and this will be the one. I have driven through OK City on my way to Fort Lostinthewoods, MO, but never stopped. Do they have a Gibson's across the street?

Or, now hear me out, people can also choose to just stay home. This is a chicken and egg scenario.

You are making the case for how people can make it work if they are properly motivated. The alternative view is that no single show is a "must attend," given the fact that the annual calendar is full of shows, and that it is therefore incumbent upon the ANA to make it as convenient as possible if the objective is to maximize attendance, both dealer and the public, as opposed to appeasing one constituency or another by moving the show to their neck of the woods.

The show will be fine because it is, after all, the annual WFOM. But dealers are bound to leave somewhat disappointed, because it is not going to be nearly as well attended as recent ANA shows in Pittsburgh and Rosemont, or the winter FUN show. Just a fact, due to the issues some folks are raising.

No, not going. The last ANA i went to was the 1996 gathering in Denver. It was an okay experience for me as a collector but many of the dealers there were acting like nervous wrecks. A dealer told me that his table cost him two grand. How much is a table at ANA now? Three grand or more?

When two expeditions of scientists, financed by the Royal Academy, went forth to test my theory of relativity, I was convinced that their conclusions would tally with my hypothesis. I was not surprised when the eclipse of May 29, 1919, confirmed my intuitions. I would have been surprised if I had been wrong. I am enough of the artist to draw freely upon my imagination. Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.” Albert Einstein- quoted in Saturday Evening Post interview (1929)

it true the braintrust of the ANA board had a hard time deciding between Oklahoma City, OK and the Aleutian Islands, AK? No, won't be attending.>

At least In the Aleutians the ANA board would be thinking of the show on the west coast 9 years and counting to 11 years after 2027 Chicago!!. But who cares about California the biggest membership state!! I keep asking myself why am I a member with such disrespect.

    Random Thoughts...
    1. I find it interesting that CA has the biggest membership
    2. I am running for ANA Governor and if honored, I will do what I can to make ANA shows as EZ to attend as possible
    3. Sadly many dealers who have been setting up at ANA for years have told me they are passing on this show
    4. The coin hobby and shows are not dying, they are evolving to more modern technology
    5. I'm off to the Philly Expo this week and would love to hear member thoughts so stop bye my table and chat

Apropos of nothing and this is NOT the place for a 2A debate... I know that personal safety is a big concern in transit to/from a coin show. And, well, OKC is a city, and has the usual problems. Thus I asked the ANA a question about firearms, their response:

"Our security does not permit firearms inside of the convention"

Omni Hotels (the convention hotel) policy: "Omni Hotels reserves the right to not allow the open carry of handguns or other weapons on the hotel premises."

One other concern if you are travelling: Oklahoma is a Constitutional Carry state, BUT most of the state is actually tribal lands and the tribal rules will apply once you leave the interstates and federal/state highways.

Actually, they probably wouldn't be thinking about the West Coast any more than they are now.

It's great that the largest state in the country has the largest membership in a national organization. Still nowhere close to a majority of the membership.

California marches to its own drummer. Always has. Good for it.

It is blessed with beautiful weather and lots of wealth. As a result, it can get away with imposing lots of regulations and costs on its residents and on its visitors that many other places cannot, or have no interest in doing.

And that's the rub. California is such an expensive PITA to do business in, that even a homegrown organization like our gracious host cannot make coin shows work in California. So why on earth should a national organization, with a national constituency, even indulge the conversation, just to appease "the biggest membership state!!"? They know full well from past experience just what a disappointment a WFOM in California would be as compared to several proven alternatives.

California residents are stuck, if that's where they have planted roots and where they earn a living. The rest of us are not, and it's an easy decision to take a pass on a show that is expensive and inconvenient to attend. Which is why you are likely to keep counting far beyond 2027, unless the ANA does not have enough fun in OKC this year, and chooses to replicate it somewhere in CA in the near future.

This probably isn't the right forum to discuss this, but I think clarification is needed so here goes. While what you wrote is somewhat correct, it is also somewhat misleading. I presume that in most cases tribal law regarding handguns would prevail on tribal land, however, most of Oklahoma is not actually tribal land. The McGirt decision and subsequent rulings did affirm that many reservations were never disestablished making most of the eastern half of Oklahoma "Indian Country" with regards to the Major Crimes Act. However, this did not make most of Oklahoma tribal land. In fact most of the land inside the newly re-recognized reservations is owned by non-Native Americans.

I jokingly tell my friends and family that I live on the Rez, and while my land is technically inside the boundaries of the Chickasaw Nation, I am not Native American and my property is not tribal land. Accordingly, neither the tribe nor the Lighthorse Police have any authority or jurisdiction on my property.

The later date for the show makes it impossible for me. School starts mid August in my district. However, I will attend my first F.U.N. show in January 2026.
