I once bought a fake 1799 bust dollar, all these years later I consider it a cheap education.

This is obviously a product of the "mentally challeged" all the way around. It's a terrible counterfiet, and the sharpness is more like G-VG. Nobody involved with this thing knows what they are doing.

Here's a real one, which is graded AU-58.

Nice coin, Bill. The slight wear on the eagle's breast and neck put it in a 58 holder. The original coin gets the "to je govno" award of the day.

Bust Dollars have never been cheap. I paid $210 for my first one in Choice VF circa 1968. That was more than month’s pay from my summer job.

I hope the fake was at a bargain price for what you thought you were buying.

    Thank you!

That one is a bit more. It’s tied for the finest known of a very scarce variety, Bolender 20. It is the plate coin in Bolender’s book.

Hey Bill, it was a long time ago but I believe it was around $800 or so… yes it was a lot of money at the time and it was a hit to my ego, but it made me realize that I needed to learn before I spent, and over time that perspective and ethic has made me a better collector and ultimately build a better collection. Life gives you lemons, you learn to make lemonade!!

Bill, it took me 8 years to find an AU Bust $ I liked with original skin. I saw three others that were dipped but not excessively, but didn't buy them for reasons I won't get into here. Almost all of the at the least sixty I saw were either bleached, lightly cleaned, or had questionable color.

These were collectible and brought a premium as far back as the 19th century. That's why so many have been cleaned or are otherwise not original They have been subject to collector abuse for longer than many U.S. coins-over 150 years.

Collector and dealer in obsolete currency. Always buying all obsolete bank notes and scrip.
