PR63. PCGS policy to grade all 1856 FE’s as PR means to me that this MS piece is not accurately graded. Moreover, ones that were correctly graded as MS before their policy change keep increasing in value.

So Ken. Do you think this FE is mint state as opposed to being a proof? You know I value your opinion as an expert on the subject and respect any words of wisdom you can shed in helping me determine what this actually is. I know a number of dies were used for both unc. and proof strikes. Thanks, Zack.
@jfriedm56:
Zack - I think that’s absolutely MS. It’s kind of a shame that they instituted this “all PR” as a policy decision. I seem to recall the graders were having some difficulty grading MS vs PR.
I heard but haven’t verified CACG was going to grade MS when warranted.
Ken @Coinscratch: I’m going to defer the next coin up to you. I believe your MS63 guess is technically correct. I only said PR63 because I was aware of their policy change.

Ken, thanks for clearing that up on PR vs MS. on 1856 FE
A few of my sets still require a MS coin and with only 306 coins graded as MS vs 1016 coins in PR makes it real hard to find one that is CORRECTLY graded

Ken thank you so much for your thoughts concerning my question on whether the coin pictured is a proof or business strike. I always wondered since I didn’t really see much if any mirrors in the “proof “ surfaces. I know the S-3 die marriage is pretty rare and was part of the original 1856 coinage struck for congressional approval, but are all the business strikes rare? Thanks Zack,
Glad someone finally got it, I am off to Vegas in an hour.
At MS64 it was hard to pass up, ANA was very conservative with this one compared to the market today. @jfriedm56
Good choices. We’re getting closer, but remember, these were very crudely struck by many inexperienced individuals. Best they could do in a short amount of time to help get gold coins into commerce.

@jfriedm56
A little twist to this one. Two parts, guess the grade, AND the BG number. Might be easy or difficult.

No guesses? Surely someone can take a stab at it. If you don’t want to guess the BG number we can just go for the grade.

@relicsncoins, after a 2nd look, the lack of stronger feather details led me to the same conclusion. I believe it is MS now also.
