VG 8, obverse rims are shot, nice coin though, O-103 (I think).

I'm going to take the average of those posted, so I'd like a few more opinions if you would.

the obverse rims are indeed weak, it is my opinion that they never were fully struck, i do like the eagle's wing and shield detail, does the reverse look fine to anyone?

VG-8. A coin I'd be happy to own.

I would say G6, but it could just as well be a VG8. Looks real nice.

how about G-5 obverse and VG-9 reverse? net grade VG-7?

as an aside, the market for these exceeds trends. after looking and looking for an O-103 I had to pay a Fine price for this. imageimageimageimage

Coin is every bit VG, some may call it fine.

welcome to the forum Julian, and thanks for the honor of your first post!

do you favor coins of the flowing, draped, and capped types?

BTW, I'm going with VG+ for this piece, so the heirs will have someplace to start when they sort through my stuff in 50 years or so...

VG-7. It just barely gets over line from Good. It's not pretty, but at least it's old.

commercial g-6, but judging by the image, it is a superbly original g-6, i would value at vg-8+ money.

sounds like a VG consensus image

200 years old and looks it. I'm pretty sure the toning is original image

now have the 1803 large and small, the 1805/4, the 06 pointy and knob, and an 07, finding the older ones really tough.

someone post a pic if you have one, love the draped busties!

  • I am new to the forum and to large cents, but was curious about the difference between the small and large date/fraction for 1803. For an example I have provided a coin here, albeit not a good one, and was just wondering if someone would be so kind as to tell me what variety this is, and how to differentiate them in the future. Thanks in advance for answering my stupid question!

Well, for the half dollars, the small/large date is mostly determined by the 3, esp. the top half, it's larger and more open on the large 3. your coin looks to me like small 3 with a shallower/sharper top loop, but I'm not very good at these, as I have Breen and access to Overton but not Sheldon, and collect the quarters and halves by variety but only have the DB cent for type. Condor confirmed my S255 for me in this thread:

    1803 Lg cent thread

and that coin, I think, is a small date and fraction:

    and here's the half dollar

maybe someone knows more about these cents for me, I had to ask too
