The captain had some gold presidential medals a few years back they were hard to sell at spot. If they would have had a denomination attached to them, they would have been priced more like gold commemoratives. Not nearly the demand for medals as coins

If HHL was totally lifted (buy as many as you want) they'd be gone within minutes, assuming the big buyers get there that quickly.

I just ordered one from the US Mint website at around 1:20AM. I purchased it for my father-in-law to give to him at Christmas. However, if it has a privy mark when I open the package to inspect it then he will be getting one I buy in the secondary market after I sell the one in the box!

You think the signed COA 1794 will be worth more? Even worth more if encapsulated? Looks like the dealers are opening up their boxes and not encapsulating the COA. I could be wrong. Anyone seeing enecapsulted COAs being sold with the Privy by dealers?
You think PCGS would encapsulate the COA when it does not accompany a sealed box but I guess there could be fakes out there as far as signed ones. Is that the reason for not encapsulating COAs as stand alones.

I can kinda understand why the Mint would give bulk purchasers the benefit of a 10% allocation, but I can't justify the MInt giving bulk purchasers a two or three week head-start in shipping. I don't understand the need for not explaining their policies and the need for keeping their customers in the dark, either.

I’m curious about the medal versus monetized thing. Does monetizing make it have more laws against counterfeiting? Like if it’s monetized then a fake one is counterfeiting whereas if it’s not monetized then a fake one is fraud but not counterfeiting or something like that.
Looks like the grade thru 70 rate is low on FS; but expected high on Adv Release.
If the trend is lower toward 69's then for collectors the 70's will climb from current levels as long as the secondary market is there with ample demand.
Sellout is required for anything like that to materialize.
Good question @Mr_Spud. Can any 3rd party replicate the medal and introduce into the marketplace. If they avoid calling them 'US Mint' produced medal, appears nothing would be illegal, and buyers could be defrauded and over-paying for bullion.
Glad you brought this up. I like the medal, have no expectations of anything special, but I suppose there is a chance. So I was thinking of sending mine to be graded, sounds like I should not open it. So I just need to send the mint box and then enclose a letter re the COA if signed? Are there other considerations in terms of the submission form?
Just called PCGS CS to verify the correct submission procedure for the potentially signed COAs.
The rep I spoke with wants @PCGS_Hy to post their policy for this 'coin/COA' to the forum. Was told to expect something from him shortly, perhaps even today.
Those numbers have been bouncing up and down as the Mint goes through vetting double orders, etc. All they have to do to sellout this morning is up the HHL to 5.

Our policy regarding the randomly included signed COAs and generally any additional items not listed on the submission form will be to reach out to the submitter for how they would like to proceed.

I totally get that a signed COA will have value to some, since there are only 230 of them. But it's not like Ventris sat there signing them as the medals came off the press, so I don't get the necessity, or value, of associating them with a specific coin in a sealed box.
I'm pretty sure that's the reason for the sealed box. Not counterfeit certificates, because certificates without privy medals are just a piece of paper with her signature.
And, she's not Abe Lincoln. Her signature isn't really worth enough to go to the trouble to counterfeit a signed COA. By taking such a hard line, all PCGS is doing is costing itself a few bucks on lost COA certifications, since no one is likely to send them a sealed box on the 230/75000 chance they are going to want to have a COA certified.

My father-in-law is in his mid-80s and is the definition of a lifetime, casual, generally uninformed collector who has never really embraced learning about the sometimes fine differences in grading, toning, counterfeit detection or the myriad issues from the US Mint. He is also far too trusting of folks in his coin club local coin dealers and I can easily see him bringing this to a show or club meeting and having someone cherrypick him with respect to a trade for material that wouldn't be worth nearly as much. As such, if I sell any privy mark piece that might land in our hands, then I can give him the generic medal (which is all he would see it as, anyway) as well as a couple of $500 gift cards to his local grocery store. It's a win-win.

They give them the head start so they can have them in hand, ready to sell, on the release date. Exact same as what they do with their own retail operation. They consider the bulk purchase dealers their retail partners.

I'm seeing 36.25% MS69 of the non-privy FH's......that number is up from 27.12% yesterday.

My takeaway... PCGS has graded over 1,200 FH Medals for the dealer class.
I assume NGC has graded close to that number.
Plus, you have ANACS and the TV barkers.
At this point one could say that leaves 72,000 for the retail crowd at this juncture.
I will be curious to see where 72K goes by week's end.
