Paulo paints a Husky and nearby Pastry Chef Joe Hickel begins crafting this year's Gingerbread Christmas Village which he advises will be his last. 2023 marks the 40th year of his designing the spectacular lobby-sized village.

A typical creation uses 2,300 pounds of sugar, icing and chocolate and 80 pans of baked gingerbread. Exquisite detail goes into each piece whether it be a bridge over a skater filled frozen pond or a chapel on the hill.

(The exhibitor hand picks the berries that go into his jams and jellies which he makes. We picked up a jar of wild Beach Strawberry Jam and another of wild Yukon Strawberry Jam. When picking the berries for the Beach variety the picker told us he encountered a Brown Bear vying for the same berries.

The Beach Strawberry (Fragaria chiloensis) can be found growing along the southern beaches extending from the Aleutian Islands to the Southeast. They are especially plentiful near Cordova where the locals vacate the beaches during July due to the large presence of Brown Bears who come there to feast on them.

The somewhat larger sized Yukon Strawberry, otherwise known simply as Wild Strawberry, (Fragaria virginiana) grows in the interior portion of the state. It has a darker red color.)
