Name a coin you would love to own if the price wasn't so high

braddickbraddick Posts: 23,758 ✭✭✭✭✭

Personally, I'd love to own a GEM MS65 Mercury dime in a PCGS Rattler slab with a Gold CAC sticker.
Sadly, they are always priced too high- in my mind's eye- to make it doable.

This one is priced at $350.
Who knows? Maybe that is simply the new normal and I should get used to it.

What is your coin?
One you would love to own yet it is simply too expensive (perhaps compared to what they used to be not too long ago)?

A Chain cent with a visible date and no major issues.

I remember when you could purchase a Chain Cent with GD04/06 problem free details back in the early 80s for 1K.
I know because I did in 1984 through JJTeaparty.
I should have kept that coin!
I eventually sold it in 1988 as a downpayment (along with other neat coins) on my first home.

@braddick the gold CAC common coins have spiked in the last few years (2x-3x in some cases). I’ve seen some easing of prices the last six months or so but it’s still high in my opinion. I think they could come back down if those that have bought a lot decide to let go of their holdings.

My example is a coin from Kazakhstan with a low mintage of 300 pieces. The release price was about 150 and one of my contacts expected to have it around 300. He wasn’t able to get it from the mint website and now the aftermarket has pushed them to 600-650, which is more than I want to pay.

Those have risen in price/value so much over the last two years.
Even problem coins now exceed $1,500.

Braddick, surely you have a coin worth more than $400 ...

as far as your question goes, any early gold before 1834

I would really like to own a Continental Dollar. These have always been too pricey for my budget.
I had some hope prices would drop after it was fairly well proven they were not struck in the United Staes, and almost certainly never circulated there. However, the market seems to have ignored that.

There are several Civil War era Seated Dimes and Half Dimes that I can't afford right now. That series has been fun for me to collect over the last few years and I'm getting down to some of the tougher issues.

This thread has taken on a life of its own.
My initial inquiry were coins you can feasibly afford yet choose not too as the pricing is too high (for what it is), in your opinion.

    Nice!

    (You have excellent taste too.)

Coin is with an east coast collector I wish it will come to auction. Supposedly the coin was never certified but is thought to be proof or MS 69 by some experts who viewed it

Would be crazy if this ever comes to auction. I wonder if it will be more valuable than the 1933 DE.
