67 if straight graded by the person wanting to leave early on a Friday but it could be a 66 if the guy was overruled by the finalizer. Then again I can see a 65 if being conservative-although the true grade should be details. But who knows, maybe the graders had it in for you and went 63 or 64. And I can even see a 61 or 62 due to mechanical error.3 -

Needs more hair detail than anything to grade above MS64 by my standards. Neither photo shows the coin is all there. Add a PLUS + for the spectacular toning if it's natural and the condition, very few marks I can see. I'm no expert when it comes to toning patterns. A worn obverse die was paired with a newer reverse die is the reason why there are steps. When there are more details in the steps than what's showing with Jefferson's hairlines, the steps have been compensated and so the coin is not the best of a full stepper since there's plenty of room for an upgrade example.
Compare the following two coins and see what a difference it makes locating an EDS example over one that has been poorly struck but again, shows all 6 steps while the rest of the coin is mushy. The EDS example just misses 6 steps.....why is that again?
Of course, a PL example with light colorful iridescent toning would be the ultimate collector's coin but so far....no-one has produced such a coin. Wait, let's check CoinFacts......nope! Not even someone with millions can produce one and for a most common date in the earrly series.

I think its in the 66+ or 67 range with a very slight chance of being in a details holder for questionable color.
Force me to pick, and I'll say 67FS.

I'm thinking the obverse wasn't to the liking of PCGS.
I think it could have slid by but I don't have an issue with the decision.
It is one of the cooler looking QC nickels I have owned.

There seem to be a lot more toned coins showing up on eBay these last few months, coming from 3-4 sellers but it has tapered off a bit. And very few if any have had full steps. But all that needs to happen is, a couple of albums full of toned coins turn up in their hands/shop and off to eBay with good photos, they go.
Perhaps the time has come, the baby boomers of 1946 to 1964, have come to roost and we'll be seeing many more.
On the Questionable Color label....are they saying they're not certain? It's not the same as the Artificial Toning label I think I've seen w/ANACS which sounds more definite than it is.

Leo your perspective on Jefferson nickles is always very insightful. I think the QC label on PCGS coins as opposed to AT label is more an indication of PCGS legal department grading the coin.
Probably of the copper content in the Jefferson Nickel you can find many naturally toned examples. I only collect toned Proof Jeffersons and last I looked they all have full steps. I even have a 1950 PR67DCAM that is nicely colored.....the only CAM or DCAM in my NOCAM registry set. But fro some reason PCGS will award a Jefferson that is toned a DCAM designation, although rare. Funny that they do not apply the CAM or DCAM label to BN or RB IHC's.
But the OP coin is certainly QC as it does seem to be almost impossible to tone a coin that splotchy, unless it was painted on?
It is way easier to find high grade DCAM Jeffs, but they all look sooooo much the same, you see one coin and you have seen them all.
But toned specimens do have their unique character. Perhaps like this PR68:

QC is just another way of saying AT. To that end, based on the image posted this wasn't even a close call to my way of thinking. Too much purple, the color progression isn't close and the difference between the obv/rev highlight a science experiment gone wrong.
