I only have this raw 1858 in a 2x2. I do hope to acquire one closer to MS in the future. Good strikes seem elusive in the circulation issues (non proof), but that is a common issue with new series coins. The Mint tends to have problems in the beginning on a new series coins.

It's not a half and it's not EAC but you should remedy that situation!

This one’s in my set. Weak on the right side but @ XF45 it’s one of the top ones graded by PCGS.
Ex: Wright Flyer Collection.

Here are slab shots of the coin I shared in my original post. Looks like a 62 to these eyes but what do I know.

@POCKETCHANGE: thanks for your kudos! One of my collector friends tells me 58+ is the current “hot” & coveted grade. Maybe as good as a 62 even. Love the crack!

Yes, I actually once sent it to PCGS for a “plus only” Reconsideration. It didn’t upgrade but I might keep trying as it’s a very scarce grade for this series in general, not to mention with a CAC sticker.

When I first saw this coin, it was in a PR63 holder. PCGS first had to approve it then designate it for what it is: 1858 SL S-PR1 High Leaves. While there are MS SL High Leaves, there were no PR’s. They did so & it’s now a pop 1/0. This is the first “discovery” coin for me & there is a certain excitement about that. Then PCGS had to include its unique # for inclusion in Registry. Not an easy process, but they got it done.
I am aware of two others that are not designated. I have a 64+ in my FE PR Complete variety set. I acquired that one out of Don Kelley’s transit set after I owned this one.
I have no plans to designate that at this time. I know the other owner & he has indicated he has no such plans either.
Rick Snow believes there may be 10 of these at a maximum. He describes this as having medium mirrors with a great strike. His PDS rating is (13:4,4,5). There are just enough marks to give it a 63; none are distracting. And, as Rick says, it makes a great coin affordable.

Did you buy this coin attributed as a proof? It used to reside in an NGC MS63 holder and it sold at Stacks last year, with a very premium bid!

I have a SL high leaves proof in PF64+ (CAC & Photoseal) as well. I also have an MS65+ NGC (CAC & Photoseal) that is misattributed. It is a proof.
Rick has it pegged as a proof when you look up the Photoseal info.
