I feel scratched is the more appropriate term in this case, but in any event this should not be in a straight grade holder

I'm in the graffiti details camp. OT somewhat, but the services are way too forgiving when it comes to early US coins with serious scratches and graffiti, perhaps the lower circ grades are treated likewise.
It’s graffiti in my opinion. The coin is only a Good-4 which means the mark means less, but it does looks intentional.
Graffiti. It appears to have been done when the coin was in a much less worn state than the present.
Crack it out and roll it up with 19 more common Morgans. It'll take up less space in the safe or SDB.

I don't believe it is graffiti based upon the nature of the horizontal scratch. I would expect it to be a straight or curved scratch if it were graffiti, not some wandering scratch like this is. That doesnt change its appearance, though.

I doubt it was intentionally done, but in my opinion, it doesn't really matter. The scratches are there, and they detract enough from the visual appeal of the coin that I wouldn't want to own it, irrespective of the surrounding plastic or labels.
It's not like it's going to be a lifetime before you can find a better one.
It's impossible to know if that's graffiti or random scratches from circulation. Does it really matter? It's still damage to the coin and the coin should have been details graded.

A "details" coin for sure, but why would someone have paid to encapsulate what is essentially a bullion piece... and... get a Trueview? Someone's lucky pocket piece??

I picked it up for $36.50. Just a little bit more than a raw cull. I figured "what the heck", why not?
It seems to me that I read years ago, that in Vegas they deliberately put Xs on the silver dollar coins. Reason: Discourage hoarding. Does anybody know if that is true or not?
After silver dollars were no longer available from the US Treasury at face value, some casinos would grind the date off their silver dollars to discourage patrons from taking them home. Later, the casinos used silver dollar sized tokens and of course the mint started producing Ike dollars which were primarily for the gambling industry.

Those scratches do not look intentional (i.e. graffiti) to me... Just PMD.... That being said, not a coin I would purchase. Cheers, RickO

I don't believe it will matter to the graders. Details coin unfortunately..
Belongs in the silver junk coin box. The holder is no help for it.

Since my LCS has been charging $32. or $33. for raw cull Morgans, I am very happy with the $36.50 delivered that I paid for this certified coin.
