Baltimore Show Report... a few newps... and a couple of milestones...

Hello Everyone

I was able to make both Thursday Afternoon (albeit late) and today's show too. I wasn't able to make it to the Thursday show until 3:30. I had two collecting goals for the show... 1) a lightly circulated (AU-ish) Seated Liberty Dollar w/Motto for the 7070 definitely certified, and 2) a nice piece of Early Copper. My first stop was by Tom Reynold's Table just to scan what he had for Middle Dates... as usual... very nice and I knew I had to come back. I stopped by a number of tables only looking for SLD's. There were plenty of no Motto's in AU grades all over the show, but finding one with Motto proved to be a bit more of a challenge. One of the first tables I stopped at was Gerry Fortin's. Beautiful Dollars... too beautiful on My Budget! However, he also had a nice array of Seated Half Dollars. I needed a Seated w/Motto Half as well, but it wasn't a real priority. I'd been watching a few of the more common dates on various auction sites but none dated 1866 that also fit my XF45 criteria... until now. Pardon my crappy cell phone images (camera battery is on the charger).

So, that was the end of the day on Thursday. I had seen maybe 4 or 5 coins that met my criteria but I hadn't been able to cover the entire floor in that short time, so I knew I'd have to come back. Here was the crowd at the end of the day. It was still pretty brisk but had definitely calmed down a bit...

So, I made it back today just after lunch and started where I had left off from yesterday. After walking the entire floor and seeing only about 6 XF and AU coins I figured I might start looking for Reeded Edge CBH's instead... since that was the only other coin I'd need to complete the 7070 I'd been working of for forever. I'd gotten a few other Type coins from Wayne Herndon before and he had this piece at a pretty good price

As for the Seated Dollar, it came down to two... this little lady followed me home. Common date, but it left enough room in the budget for other coins, I finally got to complete my 7070, and the True Views were a plus.

I was pretty pumped up for finishing my set but I had to make it around to the EAC tables too. One thing I noticed on my search for SLD's was that it seemed a lot of vendors had at least some higher end Copper... not much, but definitely there. Tom's table was pretty busy but I saw a few Middle Dates I'd been looking at the previous day still available, and Butternut was set up right there too, so I stopped and checked out Col. Ellsworth's table too. There were a couple of Classic Heads that caught my eye, but I really wanted a "statement piece" for my Middle Dates and I knew the coin I wanted... again the first year of issue: 1816.

As I put the smoldering ashes of my checkbook away ;) I got these shots of the floor as I was leaving... very satisfied with how the show turned out and the pieces I acquired today...

Thanks all... Leo

I love the 1838 Half and the 1816 Cent. I'm less enthusiastic about the 1872 Dollar. It seems to have too many small marks for the grade. However, since you are going to put it into a 7070 album it should work well.

    All glory is fleeting.

Cool report and great pick ups! The 1816 LC is spectacular.

Great report and the pick ups are wonderful!
I really like that bust half, and the large cent is over the top.
If Reynolds graded it 58, you know it’s all there!

I'm glad you had a good time.
With motto Seated dollars, that are nice, are harder to find than most people think.
I still don't have THE one for my set.

Thanks for the detailed report. Love all your new additions except for the 1872 LSD which shows clear signs of cleaning. No problem, you can always replace it with a better example.

Fun report, and great large cent in particular. I love coming back from a show with something spectacular, and that's how I'd feel with that coin.

Congrats on completing the 7070. Sounds like you came away from the show with that ‘warm fuzzy’ upon scoring some nice pieces after a long search. Great report too!

I was going to buy the 1816 straight away, but I hadn't had the opportunity to scan the show for Seated Dollars. Ever since I got beaten out last summer on a nice XF coin with some strong bids, i was determined to find a nice example to kick off the Middle Date series... this was the sole 1816 that Tom had. There were other MS examples in plastic at the show with ask prices at multiples of what i spent on this one.

We did get talking about the toning... and that was my only reservation on this piece. But upon further inspection and talking with Tom, I'm convinced that this coin probably spent a long time in an oak keg... look at the toning pattern on the reverse... like another coin was pressed up against it and the remainder was in contact with the wood from the barrel. Just pure speculation...

lol.. yeah, I like the design, but after buying 15 of them for a 76 coin Type Set I was a bit burned out on them. Since I already had a decent no Motto, I bought a lesser graded coin so I could complete the set and have a little room in the budget to focus on copper.

That's 15 coins over all denominations... half dime to dollar... NOT 15 Seated Liberty Dollars. If I had that many, I'd be selling them to fund my copper addiction. ;)
