Picked up a coin I have wanted since the 3rd grade at today's show (56 flyer)

fishteethfishteeth Posts: 2,267 ✭✭✭✭✭

Hit one of my favorite small shows today (oshkosh) and picked up some nice pieces. The best being a coin I have wanted for 30 years but for some reason never have purchased one. A dealer friend texted me when he got this coin from a client and today was more just the final negotiations.
The show itself was incredibly busy. Was supposed to open at 9am, I walked in at 8:20 and was already full of collectors while dealers were setting up. By 930 was so busy could not get up the isles. Seemed to be mostly Bullion transactions.

The coin itself is listed by pcgs as a proof which I feel is incorrect, I believe this to be the snow 3 which is thought to be from the original group made for presentation to lawmakers. This coin in hand looks much more like a nice business strike and appears to have the recut 5 and the leaf relationship to the letter C in cents looks correct for snow3. . Do you guys agree?

The coin itself has no hairlines but a few ticks as seen in photos that made it "affordable ".

Beautiful Cent! I'm definitly in favour for a new FE cent to take over these junk shield cents we are forced to use.

Tick marks in the fields but the high points of the eagle look pretty much flawless! A beautiful coin! 👍🏻

It appears to be a proof to my old eyes. Most business strikes I have seen aren't quite that sharp. In any case, THAT, my friend, is a damned fine specimen! Doesn't really get much better than that. Even the few higher graded examples I've seen aren't much better! Congratulations!

NIce! Some of the Snow 3's look MS, others proof. Much nicer than most P61's I've seen!

Does anyone know if there are any modern generation holders where they are called MS (other than reholders)???

The one posted below has a MS look to my eye, one of the few convincing examples I've seen.

@fishteeth, could you post pictures of assigned grade? Would like to see FE in PCGS holder, front and back?

You’d think pcgs would label these as specimen (sp) strikes rather than proofs.

I had a tough time deciding on whether your coin is a 58 or a 62. Really was a toss up, and PCGS must have had the same issue by ultimately assigning the 61 grade. Again, another toss up if this coin would get a green sticker as a 61? I really like the coin as a 58, and my personal gut feeling is it won’t sticker at 61. It probably would be worth the chance at that though.

    Nice coin

fishteeth: Your Snow-3 does look way more MS than my avatar (also a Snow-3 but looks prooflike and is in an older slab as MS62 - go figure).

One for that " box of 20"

    Forget the box of 20.

The rarity of it makes it a "box of 1" coin.

That is a beautiful coin. Definitely deserving of more than an AU grade. They eye appeal and really no distractions make that coin a true delight to view.
I've looked at it several times today. Each time I am drawn to how sharp it was struck.
It's great to see someone get something they have wanted so much.
    Congratulations!

I can relate to your time waiting for a coin, 32 years to locate a prooflike 1939-D Jefferson nickel and FS. I won't even bother posting it to your thread since it pales tremendously to your 1856 Flying Eagle cent.
    Congratulations!

While this S3 is in a new holder, as you can see from the cert number PCGS assigned it the coin number 2013 many decades ago, which is the coin number assigned for the business strike and not the Proof coin.
