What part of a coin collection would you part with first?

Ok - so I’m asking for a friend

Of the five sets of coins - which would you sell first?

1) Carson City silver dollars, most dates, some MS62 to 64, some circulated and not graded (VF to XF) - not the 89 but all other dates. I have 78, 81, 82 83, 84, 85, 90, 92 and 93) - also have a few CC half’s from the 1870s can throw in…

2) ASE 2020 and 2021 all issues from the mint (proof, reverse proof, the V75, and business strike uncirculated) with both type 1 and type 2 coins - was the year when they made the switch all coins from that era - even the V75 West Point ASE that was hard to get…

3) peace dollars P mint full set - all years from Philly in MS 64 or MS65 (1921 to 1935) All graded - the 65 are the common dates (22, 23, 24, 25 and 26) and the 64s more rare / desirable (21, 27, 28, 34 and 35) plus most dates in S mint that are raw coins - no MS 34S… mostly just a P set but with the rare 21 and 28 full blast white at MS64…

4) full set of IKE dollars - brown and blue silver proofs (no P or D) - just the S mint state in business strike silver

5) 2021 morgan dollars, P, D, and S with the corresponding 1921 morgan P, D, or S. None graded but the 2021s are flawless and the 1921s are AU to low MS - the P mint is probably ~MS62 or 63 but the S is likely AU 58 and the D somewhere in the middle.

Anyway - don’t get tied up on the details of each set or the value - that’s not my point. I’m NOT concerned about how much each collection is worth or which one can get the most money, what I’m concerned about is which set of coins would be a least important do you - personally - that you would be willing to sell and would be less of a bother if you HAD to sell it -

And while we’re at it which one is the most important, your comments are really welcome I love collaborating and talking to all the experts on this site!!!!

First I sold off my grade CC Morgan’s and high grade Peace dollars.

Next I sold off hundreds of graded and ungraded Morgan’s and Peace Dollars. Then I sold off rolls of WLHs, Franklins and Kennedy halves.

Funds were then put to work buying PCGS CAC gold in the last two years.

All the coins I sold are easily replaced. The ones I bought have very low pops.

Sounds like a good plan to me. I’d like to have a turbin head like your avatar and that sort of approach may be the only way to go.

First get rid of those modern Morgans. Then the Ikes. Then the ASE. Then the Peace dollars and lastly if still needing cash sell of the old Morgans.

I dumped numismatic bullion for classics.

You should first sell the coins that are easiest to replace and the coins that took you the least time to locate. Keep the sentimental coins, rare coins and coins you worked hardest to locate if possible.

In order:
1) ASE's - and fast before they milkspot
2) 2021 bullion coins - sell those before the market cools too much, assuming it hasn't already
3) Ike's - never really like the Ike dollar
4) Peace dollars - not my favorite design
50 The CC dollars - these are very common but I just like the double mintmark so those would be the last to go.

If I were sitting on a hoard of high grade silver dollars, I would probably sell them now. This is just my opinion based on what I’ve seen. I sold my silver bullion and used those funds for more pq classic gold. I would keep the nicest coins out of the all the collections mentioned but anything that was easily replaceable I would sell.

@coinbuf all ASE do not milkspot. I have ASE from 1986 that I bought in 1986 and none of them have milkspots. EDIT to add and they are still raw even.

I agree I have ASEs from the 1990’s and none “milkspotted” (is that a verb?) / I don’t think they ‘form’ milkspots, rather, they express them after some time that were already there.

Milk spots are formed from soap and other products used in the planchette cleaning that doesn’t get properly rinsed… these residues become part of the coin after being struck - tons and tons of pressure “push” the residue into the coin… so it doesn’t “form” out of thin air, my good friend, but “appears” after some time when the coin naturally tones because It was actually there all along…. BIG difference!

I can assure you that none of mine have milk spots nor will they develop milk spots in the future….!!!

I do have coins with milk spots but they always had them - they are doomed from the strike… not after that! If they didn’t get them from the planchette then they will never have any milkspots!

To answer your question:

Sell first - 2
Sell second - 5
Sell third - 4
Sell fourth - 3
Sell last - 1

But really, I'd sell all of them in any order as soon as the opportunities arose.

Honestly, none of it is very difficult to find and much of it has had decent run-ups in the recent past. Therefore, it would all go if it were up to me and it would go as quickly as possible.

The ASE's go first. I just imagine the experience of studying at each collection coin by coin, and decide which collection is the least interesting and the least fun. And studying all of those ASE's strikes me as more tedious than anything else.

All of my searched rolls. I have thousands of them. They are super good but I would sell them first. I also have like $5K face in Lincoln's and probably $10K face of OBW's of other denom's. I don't have it in me to search them. They are the first to go.

For me, I'd get rid of the ASE's - they mean nothing to me, numismatically.

Then, the Ikes - never really cared for Ikes, for some reason.

The 1921/2021 set is kind of a cool set, but would probably be next.

Then, the Peace Dollars - just because I have always liked Morgans (and esp CC's) better.

So, 2, 4, 5, 3, 1.

I would divest of the ASE's first, then the Ikes, then the modern Silver Dollars followed by the Peace dollar set. I would hold on to the CC's as long as possible.

A lot depends on why you'd want to sell.

Generally, I'd advise selling the stuff that's easiest to replace (assuming you will want to replace them at a later time) and hold onto the harder-to-find material.

Or keep the slabs (for online,show retail) blow out the rest. Similar to estate deal handled.

Just depends on one’s strategy going forward and angle trying accomplish.

I'd hold onto the coins that give me the most satisfaction, whether it's from the condition of the coins, the "look", the price, or the time I'd spent in finding them. In other words, which ones do you appreciate the most when you are handling them?
