I don't really have a preference since they mean the same thing.

It falls in line with sizing I reckon; XS, XM, XL, etc...
Yes, XM (extra medium) should not be excluded. Why is it usually the middle child that gets excluded? 🤔

XF has been the norm for me, probably due to the many years of seeing it on PCGS slabs... Or, just a verbal shorthand that I slipped into... Either way, that has been my term for the category. Cheers, RickO
I think I have always gone with XF.
Either is okay with me. The important thing is knowing what coin worn to EF or XF looks like. I will say the "EF" designation is technically more logical than the "XF" designation from the standpoint of letter assignments for the grade.

XF - goes back to the description a coin shop I frequented years ago used for the grade. It’s a good fit imo.
XF is easier to say and be understood.

I've used both but mostly XF.

I like XF but either way is OK
Many years ago there was a dealer who used the term XG for extra good meaning not quite fine, another shorthand
for VG-F or very good to fine. Made perfect sense to me.

I remember that luncheon. He spoke of many things in a somewhat rambling stream of consciousness. I would think that someone who doesn't use his first name would be more forgiving about not using the E.

I prefer EF but accept XF too... I used to use the XF designation when I was a kid...
