Planchet flaw or ED?

No not that ED... 🫣😅

Not my coin or photos, but it's an interesting flaw I am curious about. I don't have and can't take additional pictures.

What's your take on this? What kind of environmental damage causes a nearly laser straight cut across the coins edge without causing more deforming, and deforming only on one side of the coin? I see some deformation on the obverse but basically none on the reverse.

Could this be a planchet flaw?

Without seeing a whole coin picture my first thought is cropped photo.

You'll notice the rev is rotated making it look like they don't line up at first. You can also see the Obv side looks depressed somewhat at the edge.

It just doesn't look like a genuine clip to me.I'm not expert, though. If I was to hazard a guess I would even go so far as to say it's a counterfeit with a fake clip manufactured in.

When I see a coin with that level of polishing I can't help but suspect that it was done to hide or draw attention away from a part of the coin that has been worked on. An expert on clipped planchets will have to comment further and that is not me.

Hmm... Interesting theory. It's almost as if someone took a press with a straight edge and cut off the edge as you can see part of the edge appears deformed on the obverse towards the edge. 🤔

I am no error type either. But the reverse of that coin is very well struck up a the edge (dentils) unlike error information.

Possible? With a single type metal as opposed to the clad coin they show, plausible that it could show a tapered edge more? They do state that the reverse is unaffected in this case. 🤔

Again I am not an error type so take this option knowing that. The link appears to be talking about a straight clip but in addition to the straight clip there is a burr on one side (does give example of a double sided burr). When the coin is struck this planchet burr is then struck into the coin on one side. The clip is still the error clip information.

Based on the photos it doesn’t look like a genuine clip/flaw to me.

Looks like PMD to me, no way the denticles up against the clip would have that sort of definition if the metal was missing prior to the strike, and I do not see any signs of metal flow on the rim on either face.

You make sense. As the metal is being squeezed it would seem that both sides would be less defined at that point since neither side would have the full amount of metal.

I don't have pics handy of a dollar to help illustrate my comment, but here is a seated quarter with a genuine straight clip that every diagnostic you want - weak devices near the clip, metal flow on the rim, and Blakesley effect. Not every coin has every diagnostic, but if you don't see any, it's a big red flag.
