Awwww man. What are the odds that this is the only MS70 Regency Holder?

This HAS got to be a fake...the coinfacts description states STANDARD holder. 😈

The value will certainly be more associated with the plastic than the silver. Cool that it is a US item in the holder though. I’ll watch the auction for entertainment.

I am fairly sure this was the first 1986 Silver Eagle ever graded MS-70 (does anyone have a pop report that shows pop 1 from the late 1990s or 2000s?).

So few non-Israeli coins in Regency holders. Few 70s (though that one might need reconsideration). A very scarce holder, indeed.

All comments reflect the opinion of the author, even when irrefutably accurate.

The holder's awesome... but the coin looks like bird droppings! No offence meant, it's just really ugly imo...

I didn't see a picture of the bag or any mention of it in the lot description, which I assume means that it is not included. The hologram also appears to be a little scuffed up, which is also disappointing. Still a really cool slab, that I assume will bring strong money.

There was a large collection of Israeli coins submitted for grading in the regency holders. Most of these that come on the market have Israeli coins in them. That's what I know.

    Interesting, thanks.

I don't think this auction will tell us much about the rare slab market and the value of a PCGS Regency slab since most plastic collectors will pass on a rare slab if it contains an ugly, damaged, and now over-graded coin.

Those Regency holders are attractive.... However, I collect coins, not holders. Sadly, that ASE is melt value now. Cheers, RickO

I am not into collecting slabs too much but I think investment wise you would be very happy if you had picked up a handful of these years ago and squirreled them away! For slab collectors, and there are many, this is one of the grails to acquire and is a piece of numismatic history.

Too bad the ASE developed such bad milk spots as if it had stayed clean it would be an exceptional slab. I won't be too surprised if this goes for a very decent amount!

The regency slab(s) that I have seem to have a air gap between the two halves...

Also, I remember hearing stories of People dropping these in a cup of water and watching them fill but I havent confirmed that...

I think the coin was probably blast white when it was holdered, but the air creeping in over time messed with the appearance.

It's all about what the people want...

Collect what you like, but don't disparage others that do the same. I collect coins because I love the history. I also collect slabs because of their numismatic history.

I agree with you, yet I am grateful for Maywood's attitude as it will sometimes keep the prices sane. I don't want every collector to also chase after the items I find interesting.

Regardless of the slab, I'd pass. That coin is uglier than a pan of fried a-holes.

I respect your opinion, but I disagree somewhat. I know I will be bidding. I may not go as high as I would if the coin and slab were both perfect, but I will still be willing to pay up for the plastic to a certain extent. In fact while I don't seek out ugly/damaged coins (and this one is certainly both) I do tend to look for lower value coins when adding to my slab collection. That way I am not paying a premium for both the coin and the plastic. However, to your point this particular coin/slab does have some limitations that could hold it back. In addition to the ugly coin, there is apparently no felt bag, and the slab has some imperfections, which will hold it back as much as anything IMHO. It is going to be really interesting to watch.

Sorry I don't know the answer to your question, but as others have mentioned it is my understanding that the vast majority of Regency slabs are Israeli coins from the Danny Kaye collection. There is however an 1888 Double Eagle currently for sale on ebay. Unfortunately, it is out of my price range.

It would be nice if there was a census for Regency slabs similar to the Doily census, and NGC 2.0 and 2.1 census.

It will sell unless there is a hidden reserve that I am unaware of. The question is for how much.

I've already got my token bid in to keep it in my watch list. With all the negative comments maybe I'll get lucky and it will go cheap or at least within my price range.

Obviously, the coin is awful. I think the holder is as well despite its vaunted numismatic history. Never understood the attraction. I'd prefer a doily slab instead.
