Another GTG thread to put me in my place! Just kidding - I enjoy sharing with all of you and always learn something from the feedback. Also continuing to make small improvements to my coin photography.
So here is the latest. Per usual you can all cheat by looking at the coin in my registry set. I'll post the slab shot sometime within the next ~day.
So here is the coin, 1876-S Type 2 $20 Liberty. What do you think?

It should be AU-58, but it's probably in an MS-62 holder.
Care to guess what the grade is on this one? I bought it in the 1980s and had it slabbed 20+ years ago. It's not graded Unc., nor should it be.

I like it as a 58 so I’ll submit that as my guess, but as others have said, could be in a 62 holder

Truly Mint State Type II $20 Liberty gold coins are truly scarce because there have been no ship wreck coins. The piece I posted is in an NGC AU-58 holder.
If the OP coin didn't have a fair amount of rub in the hair, I would say it could make Mint State. But it does.
I have an MS-63 Type II $20 Liberty gold in my type set. Some people said it's not Unc. after I posted it soon after the purchase.
My guess is MS62, very pretty coin.

Alright guys you never fail to take me down a peg after an exciting new pickup.
The coin is a 63 in an old green holder with CAC.
When I look at this coin it presents as a solid 63. The "wear" on the hair appears to me to be more like a bit of a weak strike. The luster is excellent, especially on the reverse.
Type 2 $20 Libs get very expensive and hard to find above 63. This is probably the highest grade I'll ever have in my set.

63 was my guess before the reveal. MS62 coins which I've seen a lot of tend to have a similar look of abrasion in the fields to similar 62s and just enough pop and sizzle for the grade. Look at the reverse for confirmation. Very hard to get 63s that will cac.
I had a group of AU58 $20 Libs type two I cracked out and resubmitted and got one or two Uncs..

This one is graded MS-63. At the time I bought it and posted pictures a few said that it missed the mark. There was also a CAC approved MS-63, 1873 $20 gold in the same sale. This was during the early days of CAC. I thought this one was a little nicer. That was a financial mistake in introspect.

This is what I (and I assume many of the other posters) went back and forth about. Ultimately I erred on the side of it being wear given the slight discoloration in the hair and on the cheek, but an in-hand evaluation would be superior. Very nice coin and you can be happy to have that one in your collection.

If I chimed in before the reveal I would have said 62, 63 on a good day. It's a beautiful coin and I like it a lot.

Nice coin. I would have been 62/63 if the grade reveal photos were used to show the coin originally. Great luster. My goal is to own one Type 2 MS63 CAC for my type set. Stuck with a 62 CAC for now.

There is a huge premium for the 63s that will cac, over $3000 more than non cac.
I like your coin, Bill. The type IIs in unc went up a lot in the 90s in price. Clearly unc. without the high point friction on the cac coin, which has less portrait hits and clean otherwise.
