NEWP: 1876-P Half Eagle

Recently picked up this rare bird from our Nation’s first centennial. Mintage of 1432. PCGS survival estimate of 45. The coin has a good deal of remaining luster and I really enjoy the rose/orange color that emerges on both sides when viewed under a light.

Tough date, great coin. What I was surprised at was the grade range of the few survivors. The few that have survived are pretty well preserved. A decent percentage of MS examples...
One wonders why... Saving a centennial coin??

Actually, I just grabbed my Encyclopedia of US Gold Coins by Garrett and Guth. They do suggest the reason for nice examples may very well be related to the nation's centennial.

Given how few survivors there are, and the very low mintage, for the price, that is a LOT of coin for the money.

It would look nice with my IHC
They even have matching stickers

nice coin. as i am sure you know, more than a few of those 1870's philly half eagles are tough.

Thanks for all the kind words everybody. It would be quite tough to attempt any sort of run of the 1860’s through 1870’s Philly $5’s. Still pretty undervalued overall IMO. I liked the 1872 $5 in XF45 that was in the Fairmont Hendricks set, but the price on that one got out of hand in a hurry.
