1843-D Small D Quarter Eagle-- A NEWP -- Send this to CAC?

This 1843-D Small D Dahlonega Quarter Eagle is a relatively new addition to my collection, and I am excited to have it. I am fascinated by the story of the Dahlonega Mint and the historical significance that these coins carry.

Photos fall short of in-hand inspection, so my apologies for my photos' shortcomings. My friend @asheland has seen the coin in person and may weigh in on elements the images can't relay.

I believe that the coin has a nice crust and that the grade may be generous. The field scratches, device scratches, and cheek gouges are particularly noticeable. I also wonder whether the pattern of the scratches and crust relative to devices/stars suggests cleaning. I would not send this coin to CAC for consideration: would you agree?🤔

I have been a collector for many years, but I am a new forum member. Over time, I have become a frequent visitor to this forum, and I cannot thank @asheland enough for introducing me to this group! The discussions here have taught me a great deal, and the insight from everyone has been of great value. Thank you for sharing your time and expertise. :)

If you plan to hang onto it it doesn’t matter. It is a nice coin. If you plan to sell it it may be worth giving it a shot at CAC.

It’s a cool coin but it doesn’t look like it will cac to these eyes but there is limited downside by trying

I like the color and I think it’s graded accurately but the surfaces could be a little cleaner. I would definitely send it to CAC. Aside from the shipping fees there’s no downside risk.

Looks like a nice XF to me. Try it, it can't hurt too much if it doesn't bean.

Very cool old gold, I would be very surprised if it has not already been to NJ, but if I were in your shoes I would send it in for sure.

Nice D gold coin...and the grade appears accurate. I like the XF grade, shows some commerce and still great detail. Cheers, RickO

If you do send it to cac, let us know if JA likes your coin or not. :)

Thanks for the comments-- based on the feedback, I will submit this to CAC and will give a follow-up. I may time the submission for this summer if the backlog isn't too bad....

I would not buy it as a 45. Too much wear/small marks, cheek mark. Grading of gold seems too liberal to me so I may be off base when it comes to the current market.

I'm not sure what percentage of classic certified re-submissions cac has been getting, I would guess quite high, so no doubt they have already seen it but there is no harm sending it in preferably with other coins to cut expenses and possible disappointment. The C and D coins were graded on a curve as most were poorly struck.

I am guessing the same concerning re-submissions for CAC. It would be interesting if CAC would someday provide some redacted statistics concerning how many times they have seen specific coins; I wouldn't be surprised if this coin has had even more than one appearance in NJ. The C and D grading curve does seem steep; beans are seldomly seen for these coins.

Thanks for the great input--> I will keep everyone posted! :)
