Do you think this monster toner is worth the premium?

As title states, its a higher end grade for a peace dollar with very nice colors, but I was curious if more experienced members feel its worth the money

I agree with Mark. I don’t love the obverse but it’s got a lot of color and the reverse is quite nice. Add to that the 66 grade and I also think it could easily sell for more.

Seriously, this is a coin that probably looked nicer before some of the toning flaked off, especially on the obverse.

I actually find the toning on the Obverse a negative, Reverse is ok. I recently sold a couple of Peace Dollars to a dealer and I was paid a better price for my blast white coins then the ones with some natural toning. It appears Blast White is what drives the peace dollar market right now. Nothing against toners, I own several myself.

It’s not worth it to me, but it isn’t priced out in crazy land. I could see it selling for that much (or a little more) to the right collector.

Rainbow toned peace dollars are very unusual. Having one slabbed, and slabbed at 66, is rare.
I would not purchase this dollar.
But if you're hunting for a slabbed rainbow toned peace dollar, this would be a viable option.

To me the obverse is neutral to slightly positive. The reverse is stellar. How stellar? Only the buyer and seller need to agree on that. I wouldn't buy it at that price, but I don't generally pay big toning premiums for Peace dollars.

I personally am not fond of toners and such like this, but that is steve weber's listing, I suspect his asking price is right on target, steve knows the dollar market, especially toners quite well.

The TrueView makes me think the obverse is neutral. The reverse is great, but the Ebay photos show a negative obverse and a similar attractive reverse (similar to the TrueView). I think it warrants some premium, but how much I don't know.

I don't collect Peace dollars but I do know that coins with exceptional toning are very scarce, and as such I suspect that there is at least one buyer out there willing to go to a high premium to attain a coin with nice tone.

I am a big toned Peace dollar fan.
The obverse and the terminal looking toning at the bottom of the reverse don't make me love this one.
Not saying it's a bad coin or that it isn't worth the price, just not for me.

That coin isn't truly awful, a nice reverse is just about cancelled out due to the refried beans barf toning on the obverse.

I've paid what I consider a "nuts" price for a 1963 proof quarter (!) so I won't judge whether there will be an eventual buyer for this piece at the premium assigned. That said, I don't find the obverse attractive and so I would not pay a color markup for this example.

Given that the coin just sold on GC for $936 a few weeks ago, I don’t think he’s worried.

I do think $936 seems too cheap, though. I’ve seen lesser coins sell for way more lately.

This is gorgeous. Personally, I think you did well declining. When I hear Peace dollars are rare with tone, this is what I think a nice piece should look like. Great coin!

Obverse is pretty, reverse I don’t like that irregular toning. Silver band in between the color kills the look

I agree in part, but overall, I'm torn. I think the photos leave a lot to be desired. As I see it, the central reverse has great color, and I'm not sure how the outer 30-50% or so will look. The lustre I'm assuming to be there based on the grade may make the color look livelier, but I'm still not sure what color exactly is there. I also don't like the obverse. My read is that the color outside the portrait isn't particularly exciting regardless, but the dark spots on the face are unattractive.

So yes, I agree that the coin has some great color, and it's a nice grade, but it's not a coin that enamors me by any stretch. It's rare color for a peace and that helps, but I think that has to be balanced by considering not just some of the shades which happen to be pretty and rare, but the larger context that it's not a coin that's simply nicely toned, but a coin that is toned with some nice colors, but, at least in my opinion, may not be "nicely toned" on the whole.

For what it's worth, the coin has been listed a few times, and even here we don't know if it actually sold (off eBay, I presume) or the seller just took the listing down. A really nicely toned Peace in 66 could sell for well more, sure, but, at least to me, this isn't that higher priced coin.
