1820 50C Capped Bust purchase in Fairbanks, Alaska and Northern Lights

My wife and I went to Fairbanks, Alaska to take photos of Northern Lights. My wife looked out the window and said “there is a coin shop across the street”. Sure enough and the next day we went over to see what they had. I found an 1820 50C Capped Bust. Here is a link to their website, http://alaskararecoins.com/ , they were very courteous and they had a nice selection of graded and ungraded coins. I don’t have an 1820, but they had one that I purchased. Here are some shots…

I should add, it was really cold there! During the day 2 to minus 20 degrees and at night minus 10 to minus 30 degrees! Damn cold!

There are a few things still on my bucket list and seeing the Northern Lights is one of them. Fabulous photos! Nice coin too.

The coin shop is in downtown Fairbanks, and a very polite gentleman runs it. Yes, below zero temps are common there in February. It's a bit like the Upper Great Lakes, except it is dry.

I went to Anchorage and Homer in the summer of 2020, and going in winter to see the northern lights (or going to Iceland) has long been on my bucket list.
Reminds me of a (completely serious) post someone made in a Washington state aurora watchers Facebook group a few years ago. It went something like this: "I just booked tickets to go to Fairbanks the week of June 21... can someone recommend the best place to see the northern lights?" As you can imagine, the internet was kind to that poster.
Got to tell you that we went to Fairbanks, this time of year is best, but, it was really cold. I live in northern Ohio and we get cold, but this cold was at a whole new level! Go prepared!
Great photo's of the Northern Lights ... and a nice 1820 to boot! That's an interesting coin, for sure. If you know the Overton #, then you might also know the significance.

I've been to Alaska Rare Coins twice and have had a great experience each time. Can't say the same for the auroras, missed out each time. That coin shop is top shelf in my book and always worth a stop if you are in Fairbanks. Their auctions are worthy too, no pics but super accurate descriptions.

Nice coin... Fantastic pictures of the Northern Lights.... I have seen mild auroras... but never the full impact lights such as you captured. Thanks for posting those pictures.... Cheers, RickO

what a wonderfol sight to see and nice coin as well
O-108 supposedly the only double die reverse in CBH.
If you look at the reverse, the eagles tips on the left, the leaves on the bottom show the double die effect.
As Herb indicated, the 20-108 is the only recognized Double Die for the entire Capped Bust series. It is a DDR, most noticable at the Olive Leaves.
