I agree! Here's another view of the coin without direct lighting, i.e., what it would look like in hand until one focuses light on the coin to bring out the color. It looks like a toned copper medal. At other angles, it looks like a nice, dark-brown, two-tone circulated cameo.

Thanks! The funny thing thinking back on this purchase is I had just missed the closing of an auction on eBay for a nice-looking circulated cameo in VF-EF that closed at around $270 when I spotted and bid on this coin as a consolation of sorts and was somewhat comforted that it was at least inexpensive. This coin does not photograph well because of its heavy peripheral toning and it's difficult to capture the underlying luster. When it arrived, I thought "Wow! This must be at least an AU58" and the more I looked at it I started entertaining the idea that it might be uncirculated. After a 5-month wait, there was lots of whooping a hollering when the grades for my first submission to PCGS were posted. It was a triumphant happy moment as if the coin had just won a horse race.

The Pan Pac is one of my favorite designs as well. Here are a few jaw-droppers.

Purchased this two weeks ago. I have been trying to put together a circulated commemorative set. I figure if you have enough money, putting together a Mint State set is no problem. Never saw a circulated Hawaiian that was problem free so I had to pull the trigger. Nice eye appeal. Joins the others in a vault for safekeeping.

I never realized that problem-free circulated Hawaiians are hard to find. I haven't really looked at them much. I didn't think I'd ever purchase one for my circulated commemorative collection because I wasn't crazy about the design for the price* until I spotted a nicely toned ICG AU55 at summer FUN last summer. Not sure it's problem-free but it's in a TPG holder and has a nice look.

*A problem finishing a circulated commemorative collection for me with only three left to acquire is that some of the most expensive coins in the series have designs that I don't care for such as the Cincinnati, Spanish Trail, and the Hudson (which I have). I missed bidding on a nice Bridgeport (love the art-deco eagle!) a few years ago and haven't seen an attractive one since then.

This is a great thread. I once swore off classic commems. Then I started to dabble..... then I really got hooked. It's a great series (mostly) and many of the designs are fabulous works of art:
