Does PCGS encapsule Ingots

I have a 5 oz. San Francisco assay ingot from the late 30's to mid 40's. These ingots are about 1/4 inch thick, 2 inches long and 1 inch wide. Here is a picture of the ingot.

Does PCGS or NGC encapsule this size ingot?

I know they do small ingots - let us know what you find out about larger ingots after calling them on Monday.

They do the smaller shipwreck gold ingots, like this one from S.S. Central America.

Interesting piece of silver... Not sure if the 999.5 has been stamped over something, or what is going on there.... Ingot has been through some rough periods. I think they would slab it, but would call first to get the details. Cheers, RickO

When they encapsulate, do they also authenticate? Do they do anything but Mint bars?

I bought one similar about 5 years ago from a local shop. I kept it for a little while but couldn't resist flipping it because of the premiums they were bringing. I sold it for around $500 if I remember correctly - they sure have gone up in value since then.

You are right about the prices going up on these ingots. I bought the one in question for $800 around 2004-05. They seem to be up to $2500 to $3500 now. Some are more than that.

I sent them an e-mail PCGS customer service and they responded a few days later. Toni Morse at customer service didn't know so she says she will find out and contact me later. That was on Jan 7. Still waiting.

It's been two months since I e-mailed Cesar at PCGS. He was to find out if they encapsulated ingots this size. I have heard nothing. I emailed him again today. I hope I get some information this time.

FWIW, I have had better luck getting answers when I telephone, as opposed to e-mailing.

Someone finally contacted me from PCGS. They will encapsulate the ingot so I sent it in. As far as I can tell its in its encapsulation stage and will soon be shipped. I will post it when it get here.

PCGS finally got around to encapsulating my ingot. It encapsulated in a large size slab that is used for the 5oz silver coins like the ATB 5oz quarters. PCGS did not grade but gave it a genuine designation of 80. PCGS does not explain what this number means. Any ideas? On the slab it has:
PCGS Genuine
San Francisco Mint Type I

How cool. I have no idea what 80 indicates? Maybe part of the 100 pt. scale?
I hope they expand and start grading vintage bullion. I'd think there would be huge demand given the amount of fakes being produced like crazy this day & age.

I am GUESSING that it means genuine. IOW, it is an authentic, circa 1930, Type 1 hallmark, silver ingot from the SF Mint.

Interesting 'post/item'. FWIW, Ken Conway penned a brief overview of these pieces here. His website is currently "under construction". It should be interesting to peruse 'if/when' it comes online.

@PCGS_Moderator - Please consider adding this code to the PCGS Grading Standards. As far as I can tell, "80" is not currently defined, and this is causing confusion for customers.

I could find several references to the new codes for Genuine slabbed coins. But they would just not say that 80 was the previous general genuine designation. This thread Don W states it in the OP. Note: it appears some of the other codes that the post references have been changed (or were incorrectly posted) as they are different from the current pcgs no grade codes. So it would appear pcgs is using code 80 for non-coin genuine slabs (maybe).
