I always enjoy seeing how people who are inexperienced with shipping coins choose to ship stuff. :sunglasses: Can't complain, coin is DANDY.

I've received amateur shipments before, from "tape happy" sellers. I hate that. Especially when it is currency, or worse yet, stamps.

    PS:

Thats how 220+ year old silver should look. Just curious about the mark on the wing above the L in Pluribus.

I've seen terrible packaging like loose coins and banknotes in envelopes from sellers I expected would do better and then I have seen fiendishly creative packaging from sellers in Russia because they are so used to having to pack to prevent tempting theft.

When I used to sell on eBay I would put the slab in an envelope and tape it to the inside of the box behind the label. Nothing would move or rattle and the box felt empty which I thought was a good theft deterrent. I'm sure some of the recipients thought the box was empty when they got it.

Do you always record opening of expensive packages? That seems like a good idea, although as of yet I have never had an empty or switched delivery.

with a packaging job like that you can tell the seller has no clue, you're lucky they didn't "shine it up" for you.

Yeah the price was kind of steep for it raw but I saw a lot of potential in the pics so I grabbed it hoping for the best. I am thrilled with it in hand and think I got it for a fantastic price.

Great looking surfaces. I wish more 18th century coins looked like that. Is there any smoothing of graffiti above the United on the reverse looks like something may have been smoothed there

No, the surfaces are completely original, as far as i can tell. Pretty remarkable. > @braddick said:

Yeah, thats my biggest concern with it. But given how its toned over and blends very well, I'm guessing it's contemporary and will be accepted.

    I agree, I don't think it will be an issue. It's a well-hidden mark.

I agree. My only and single concern would be the slightly round the coin is from being dropped on its edge- as seen on the reverse at 2:00 and conversely on the obverse just an inch to the right of the date.
Wholesome and highly detailed coin, for sure.

This was also my biggest concern from images, but in-hand, it doesn't really affect the edge much at all, though visually distracting. I think it's a really nice, original 45.

AMAZING original surfaces. Actually, the seller could have done a lot worse -- so being amateur coin packers, I find no fault on their part. Congrats on the grade and that amazing coin! I hope to have an example of that quality one day.

About 30 years ago, I purchased a $5 Hawaii Note. It didn't come for about a week and when it did it looked like a small book might be packaged. Sure enough it was in an old 2nd or 3rd grade Spelling book. Just stuck in about the middle of the book. Now that was weird. Don't know what ever happened to the book, but a most ingenious way to package the note as it was well protected.

Rim issues, meh; given the age many such are forgiven -- and the surfaces are so impressive, no worries. Even the gouge on the eagle's wing is of little note, as it's blended in so perfectly over the decades. If it were shiny and new like a bright staple scratch, that'd be another thing, and thankfully it's not!

I would rather it be taped well and good than have the coin escape through a tear in the envelope that could happen while in the sorting machine etc.

They likely would have charged extra if it was on a regular sub ($3,000 max). I had a couple economy coins upcharged because they graded higher than I expected. PCGS must have started doing this recently, as it never happened to me before.

I am looking at my last submission form, and it seems value max for regular is now $2500.
If they decide after the grade the value should be $5000, they are going to charge me express fee of $65 for that coin?

That is down to the level where even most gold double eagles would have to go express

I think it is a percent of the value over the limit, which is usually less than the difference, at least it was for me.

I've posted before somewhere with my gripe, given the latest costs of the annual gold and silver eagles, I really wish they'd change their tiers -

    • Modern Value - $500 limit (up from $300)
    • Modern - $5000 or at least $3500 (up from $2500).

It's a double-edge sword - you are happy about the higher grade, but annoyed by the extra $.
