If you are really entranced by that "better coins through manipulation" look, $100. It would not be for me.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Maybe just. Little more than melt. I could sell it honestly in my booth for a bit more than melt. It’s already way past where I’d be a bidder.

Melt for me also. But knowing that I could sell it on eBay for $64.77 (current bid) or more, I guess I would pay $50 and flip it. For my collection-melt, to flip $50. Seems like all coins are hot right now. It could go over $100, who knows, we shall see.

I ask because we're all good with Hobo nickels and Opium (Trade) dollars and other manipulated coins (post mint). I don't know if the above qualifies as a "California Special" but if not, it is close.
We as collectors are cool with some artful coin work yet not with others.

I once has a very similar coin. It wasn't bad looking but was just off a touch. It's worth a hundo in a nice book or set.

I usually don't bid on items where the seller has -0- feedback and joined ebay last week.

airplanenut: Excellent point. There is a distinction and you clarified exactly what that distinction is well.
    Thanks!

My honest top bid would be melt, but then it is not something that I would normally even look at.

Sold it for $67. He’s got half a dozen listing that appear ok. Not for me he’s got a Truman hard to tell him about price couple others. 0 feedback is not comforting

Even then it's not the same. Contemporary counterfeits were made to be used in commerce. However good or bad they were, they are a part of the history of a coin series in the way coins were intended to be used. They weren't made just to deceive collectors. A better comparison would be the Chinese counterfeits of today which we all eschew (beyond those studying them) because their only purpose is to fool a collector. Yes, there are a few rare exceptions like the Omega Saints, but at that point I think the intrigue is that they are just so incredibly good that now you're back in the realm of art and skill.

I would have considered going up to $55 just for the novelty. I've bid around that much for a few Columbian Expo details coins that were interesting to me (where others would likely not see much value).

That one is not for me. I don't like Morgans in general and I REALLY don't like that one. I might go for it if was considerably below melt.

I’m speculating the buyer will crack it out and then sell it as a raw DMPL or PL. I hope I’m wrong.

I would not bid on it ... or buy it if at a show .... It is ruined for collectors. Silver stackers would take it for melt.... I do not understand why anyone would buy it for $67 plus shipping. Cheers, RickO
