1796 Is this coin genuine or counterfeit

I’m asking for a coworker. He said a friend of his showed him these coins and he’s trying to find out if the 1796 is real or not. Supposedly the friend was a Valet and received it as a tip about 35 years ago. I know what I think, but want to hear what the forum says

    Yes it is a poor quality counterfeit. The Walking Liberty half dollar in the picture is also fake.

    Are you sure he didn't say 35 days ago?! That looks like the ones that show up on ebay from 0 feedback sellers.

    Very crude fake. Typical of the counterfeits coming out of China these days. I've seen them for sale at flea markets.

    if @jedm picture is the real deal, the OP's picture shows... the WRONG NUMBER OF STARS on the obverse?!!? besides the wrong size and position of stars and other things, why would counterfeiter put the wrong number of stars?

    Fake. Why? Dentils and edge are wrong, obv stars too small, numerals wrong font - style and size, portrait not even close, lettering font wrong...and no heraldic eagle until 1798

    Buying the Bowers early dollar book The Encyclopedia of United States Silver Dollars 1794-1804 would educate a person enough to easily identify this as a fake.

    The 1796 "dollar" is definitely a counterfeit.

    CoinFacts lists a 13 star version, but not for this date. The 13 star version was in 1798

    1796 is too big? They only started making them in 1794, so it can't be that far off... :grin:

    Mistakes are natural. But repeated mistakes without reflection are something else. That may be the “stupidity” he was referring to. In research, he admitted uncertainty openly. “If we knew what it was we were doing, it would not be called research, would it?” This shows humility. Even a Nobel laureate accepted doubt. That humility makes the quote less cynical and more observational.

    Bad, not even close to the real thing. Amateur night for the worst of the counterfeiters.

    Revised to add, here is an example of the real thing.

    Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
