How to get a slabbed coin that has rotated back in proper orientation

Herb_THerb_T Posts: 1,755 ✭✭✭✭✭

I have a couple of slabbed NGC graded coins that have rotated in their holders. What have others done to get them back in proper orientation?

Old holder? I don’t think I’ve ever had any coins in NGC slabs rotate. Old PCGS rattlers, yes. Tap tap tap is what I’ve been told. But never cared enough to do so.

Tapping the edge of a holder shall generate vibrations that will cause a coin to slowly rotate. Which direction of rotation is dependent on your technique. Good luck. Peace Roy

I've posted this before. It works often but not always. And remember, if it rotated once it will likely rotate again.

The YouTube was really helpful. Unfortunately, my coins in both types of PCGS holders will not rotate. I've tried moving all around the edges of the holders. Any suggestions?

The rotation problem is very annoying. You can get a coin out of your safe deposit box, drive home and find it more rotated. I have knocked coins against a hard surface and gotten some temporary satisfying results, but once the coin states turning it keeps turning. It's something you have to accept with slabbed coins. It does not make you feel kindly toward the slab company, but it's the way it is with certified coins.

Will re holding be an option? I know it cost money, but I would think it wpuld keep moving even when moved back.

I purchased a coin several years back and had the same problem, well a couple of forum members gave me some great advice like Namvet posted.
Just tap, tap, tap and look, if your coin is still rotated tap and repeat.

As I said, the ultrasonic vibration doesn't always work. The coin might be jammed in the gasket. Something more might be needed. Remember, it rotated from its original orientation. Logically, it should rotate again.

Sometimes I slap the slab flat against a hard surface like a desk. One or both sides. And then retry vibration.

The rapping of a slab corner against a hard surface, in a drawing/sliding fashion, can work. Or not. A friend showed me damage incurred from aggressive rapping (misshapen slab corner).

    Know when to give up.

I never cared if the coin rotated (no OCD here).... However, I did rotate a coin once with an electric shaver, just to see if the vibration method works. It did, I rotated the coin all the way around. Cheers, RickO

If it REALLY bothers you, you might consider collecting only steel pennies in slabs. Those are probably easy to adjust.

Why not just wait for it to rotate all the way around?

Here's an NGC coin that's rotated. Only one I've ever seen.

A electric razor or tooth brush the vibration will spin it back.

What about this “use at your own risk” technique?

I love the tooth brush technique ... . I had an NGC 1st gen edge view holder that had rotated and it work like a charm. ... but that was the only time I needed to do it

Toothbrush electric and tap against your palm or lay a cloth down on the counter. I have moved ngc and pcgs slabs various kinds. I find taking a deep breath and clearing my mind helps. Remember there’s no hurry 🤓🙀

I would flick the holder with my finger.
If it moves than I would adjust which side to flick based on what direction it moved.

I have an 1877-CC Trade dollar in a new PCGS three-fanged gasket holder. It is rotated 90-degrees. Ain't no rattler. I'd send it in for reholdering, except that it has a CAC sticker and that would involve a second step in getting it replaced. For a five-figure coin, it just is not worth the opportunity costs associated with having it out of inventory for long. Could get the reholdering at a show overnight, but CAC might require a considerable wait and expense.

Has anyone ever cracked a coin out that has been rotated around in the holder?
Are the edges damaged in any way?

Thank you, Heavenly Father, for first loving us.
