@1630Boston... Thanks for the history... I have, over the years, heard a few other 'opinions' on this topic. However, I have seen this one as well, and always considered it the factual detail of how the motto was derived and eventually included on coins. Cheers, RickO
Blatant disregard for the concept of separation of church and state. That's all I will say.
"It's like God, Family, Country, except Sticker, Plastic, Coin."
Interesting. Thanks, Boston.

Nope. The government cant tell the individual what to believe in. Doesn't mean the government cant believe in religion. They just cant force you to believe in it.
Opening sessions of congress have always started with a prayer, our law system was derived from the Ten Commandments, Moses sits atop the supreme court building, and oaths of office happen with a Bible, unless you are a... never mind.
And that is all I will say...
That ignores the Establishment Clause. Members of the government can believe in any religion they choose, the government itself cannot take an official stance. The prevalence of Christian imagery and practices in politics has simply been a reflection of voter demographics for the last 200-odd years.
The First Amendment contains two clauses that prescribe the government's relationship with religion. In the first instance, the Establishment Clause states that "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion." In the strictest reading, the Establishment Clause proscribes any adoption of an official religion by the federal government. More broadly, the phrase functions as a way of assuring that the federal government will not adopt any stance in favor of or against any religion. The second clause of the First Amendment that deals with religion immediately follows the Establishment Clause: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the exercise thereof." Where the first clause prohibits Congress from adopting any particular religion, the second clause prohibits Congress from interfering with an individual's exercise of religion. This second clause is called the Free Exercise Clause. The Free Exercise Clause protects an individual's right not only to believe what he or she would like but also to practice it. The clause protects individuals from laws that would expressly inhibit them from engaging in religious practices.
When the government begins implementing any sort of religious preference into its operation, we get dangerously close to skirting the express condemnation of religious establishment by the government.

This thread was meant to shed some light on the history of our coinage

Great post 1630. Thank you.
Our country had just endured the Civil War. I don't think closing this thread or burning books is right.

Religion and politics should not be on this board, yet some insist on forcing it.

If 10% (or whatever) of the population are atheists, then maybe it would be fair to make 10% of the coins like this ? :

Or maybe putting any sort of religious or non-religious connotation on money is a slippery slope to be avoided ?
