Coin... woodworking?

Needed a weekend project so decided to make myself a nice "display tray."
When I have slabs out I am always worried about getting them scratched. Try to wipe surfaces before I put them down, etc.
Thought this tray would be a nice companion to the plastic pcgs box. Out of the box, onto the tray.
Not finished yet, just a test fit. Frame made from some scrap walnut, small piece of 1/4" plywood, and a sheet of self adhesive velvet. (sold as jewelry box liner).
I think it looks pretty good, should be nice when its glued up and has an oil finish applied. Need to cut a better piece of velvet too, this one slightly too small.
Anyone else make their own slab boxes, cabinets, trays, etc?

It does look nice.
Is there anything to position the coins or are they simply lose in the velvet?

That’s really nice!

Good looking. Nice grain on the walnut too!

Love walnut. Nice job.
Looks nice! I hate to do this to you, but this was a thread from before you joined the forum that you might like to page through.

Its just a flat tray for handling whatever coins I have out. Nothing to hold slabs in place. Laid out my 8 piece set just to show the size.

Awesome cabinet. I have done some basic furniture but far from an expert woodworker. I struggle with anything that isnt square.

Classic look. The colors are a perfect combination!
That's a good idea. I do something very similar, from a binder with Eagle slab pages into this plastic tray. I have made eight coin wooden display trays in the past very similar to yours. I hinged two or more of them together to hold up to 32 slabs.
Nice tight 45 degree corner joints! Impressive!

That is very nice, simple and elegant.

Never a slave to one plastic brand will I ever be.
I made this small display case from German specs. It's suppose to open from the left. Looks like the only thing I'm missing is gold!
Picture from the workshop. Got it glued together and applied danish oil. A couple of unfinished pieces on the left to show finish comparison. I like danish oil on walnut.
Once the oil absorbs and has some time to set / stop offgassing I'll put some new velvet on and itll be done.

I'm guessing you should change that word - LOL!!!

Nice! I thought about making something like this, but decided that I'm not really displaying anything. A nice tray will serve better vs something with glass over the slabs. (And much easier to make).
But your case looks great. I like the red. Kinda debating if I want to go green instead.

Done! Thanks! You have now been nominated my official spellchecker!

Those are nice cases, but far to fancy for me when I am working with a bunch of slabs. I use a gun cleaning mat... one that has not been used for its original purpose (I have several). It is soft, clean and 22x18, plenty of room. Then, when done, roll it up and tuck away. Cheers, RickO
Great idea, I should have thought of that! Oh well. I had fun making my tray. I'll get a finished pic later this morning.

The tray is very nice and you will have a nice display item....Always good for show and tell if you have friends who also collect. Cheers, RickO
You guys are a lot more creative than I am. I like that you didn’t go too big but limited it to holding eight slabs making it easy to manage.
Are planning to make enough cases to hold all of your slabbed coins or just one to use in order to show a few coins at a time?
Just to hold a few at a time when I have them out.
Finished pics here. It turns out I didnt have enough velvet after screwing up the first piece so had to do 2 pieces and you can see the seam more than I'd hoped. Also the black REALLY shows dust etc. Half a day and its a mess already. Wondering if I can get some black vinyl or something else that will be easier to clean or maybe not show the dust so much.
Anyway here is the finished product with a few coins I am going to put on the BST later.

Very nice craftsmanship.

Gorgeous tray!!
I'd stay away from vinyl ... maybe find a gray to charcoal velvet?

Woodworking place where I got the black also has green. Maybe would show dust less.
We'll see. I think I can live with a little dust for now. I think.

Very nice!
Ditto Pedzola on the green. I think it would still look nice but not show up dust as much versus the black.
Really nice work!

My favorite woodworking / coins hybrid is making grips for 1911 Series pistols.
There are a lot of nice 1911 dated coins to complement this blending of hobbies.
