GTG - 1804 Draped Bust $5 newp

PedzolaPedzola Posts: 1,028 ✭✭✭✭✭

Had fun with my last guess-the-grade so thought I'd throw another one out there. I know I always enjoy taking a shot at these.

Just purchased this amazing addition to my collection from Jon at Scarsdale coin, at the NH Coin Expo this morning. Got it under the camera as soon as I got home.

I think the pics looks great and mostly accurate, but note that the luster and color are much more complex in hand. The color changes a bit depending on the angle you're looking, and the fields have some reflectivity. Fantastic eye appeal.

This is my second early gold piece, the first being an 1801 $10 which I have posted a few times. This 1804 $5 doesnt have exactly the same look as the $10, but nice original color and surfaces.

Never thought I'd be able to buy pieces like this, and it represents a new direction and level of collecting for me. I might need to cool it for a while after this one though, the wife is getting suspicious. :D

Feel free to guess the grade if you are inclined. Will post the slab shot with grade tonight or tomorrow.

    Lovely, gorgeous coin!
Guess I'll be the first but not last to guess 58+. Above 62 would be surprising to me.

I'm going to say AU58 & CAC-worthy... looks like it has a bit less wear than my AU55 1804 LG over SM date example.

    Got Crust....y gold?

Congratulation too bad we didn’t meet each other yesterday. The next show we will have to. Great looking coin, I’m in the same boat, can’t buy just one 🤣
    Au58 is my guess.

Thats gorgeous! Congrats. I know you were itching for a new gold piece. I have bought from Jon as well, always has nice stuff. I don't know these well but ill guess 58. Jon usually CACs his stuff, so 58 Cac. Love the toning and look on this particular coin!

I’m a bit late since I was traveling but I guessed 58 before scrolling down far enough to see it. Excellent pick up for the NH show. Congrats!

The overall look of this coin is fantastic, and a really stellar AU coin like this is more appealing to me than the majority of coins in MS60-62 holders. It's a whole lot cheaper too. Win-win. :)

    I would have guessed 55.

I snapped a couple of phone shots yesterday in daylight to see if I could capture the coin a little differently.

There is luster beneath the crust that shines through, and its not obvious from my photos above. These aren't perfect either but different perspective.

    I really like this coin.
