I don't believe that they are technically medals, but I collect the Apollo commemoratives and those signed by astronaut Fred Haise...

I mainly collect raw Ancients, PCGS Mercury Dimes, and raw CSA'S... but have misc other sets...Jeffhttps://www.pcgs.com/setregistry/mysetregistry/set/215647https://www.pcgs.com/setregistry/mysetregistry/showcase/8378

I do not 'collect' medals, but have a couple I found interesting. I do collect challenge coins, which are similar in some respects. Cheers, RickO

    What type do you collect?

  • PurpleEchoPurpleEcho Posts: 139 ✭✭✭

Wow Goldminers, Thank you for the link!

Please forgive my ignorance; So these aren't considered Commemoratives in the usual sense and neither are they considered 'so-called-dollars'?

Wow. Thanks for noticing my favorite and my most difficult modern medal set. Yes, you are mostly correct. These are a combination of SCD, Turner medals, etc, but all are in John T. Dean's book which is critical and recommended and I can give you additional info, PM.

All of these National Commemoratives of the US Mint were approved by Congress to be National Commemoratives to be minted usually at Philadelphia and these were then only distributed to the individuals or locations, making many of them hard to find in good shape. You will see that most have very low PCGS populations, and several are extremely low mintage.

These sort of fill the gap between denominated US Mint 50 cent type modern commemoratives mostly after 1954 and those approved in later years to honor individuals or events, They are not legal tender coins, so are in the form of various NCM medals.

    Cheers

I did not collect prior to December of 2018, then I got hooked on Wiener Cathedral medals, then other medals with high relief designs. Now I buy/collect more medals than coins or bullion. I am happy with my collections and still pursue Wiener Cathedral medals. I think I now have more than 50 Cathedral medals (Wieners, Bianchi, and others).

Tho I'm not in favor of Presidents on coins I do like these medals for the excellent likeness and the extreme high relief of these Medallic Arts medals and have been actively collecting them of late.

I agree. I had several and decided to sell them a few years back.....shoulda kept them.

I don't come across medals too often but when I do collect them it's usually topical. Any related to the Hudson Valley in NY or automotive themed are my primary interests, and I don't really differentiate between coins, medals or tokens. Since it's the subject that I'm after that's what I focus on.

I read that there were some squirrel themed medals made by the Society of Medalists but I have not been able to track any down yet.

I too shift my interest from coins to medals.

US Mint medals that were manufactured for use by a sitting US President. One had to be recognized by the US President to be awarded/gifted these "appreciation" medals. Only Presidents Eisenhower and Kennedy had appreciation medals struck by the US Mint. This US Mint medal series was undocumented for over a half-century and was first cataloged as a US Mint medal series in 2014.

Just prior to Dwight D. Eisenhower ending of his 2nd term as POTUS, unissued silver & gold medals were returned to the US Treasury for destruction.

Original mintage was 400. Collector availability is 267. The medal below is the current top pop from NGC. This medal was featured in two of my books and numerous coin show exhibits.

Examples of other Dwight D. Eisenhower appreciation medals issued during President Eisenhower's goodwill tours. Besides the goodwill tour issues, there are other medals awarded/gifted by President Eisenhower that are not shown.

More information about the 5 Classes of these medals can be obtained at https://potus-sgm.com/

I don't collect any per say but I did have a chance to buy an entire collection a few years back.
I had a really good time going through them all and learning what i could.
In the end, I only kept about a dozen pieces before selling off the rest of it.

I collect many medals. Anything I find attractive.
This post made me pull out some boxes.
Box number 1 is full of Wiener cathedral medals.
    Probably my main interest.
