When you can't afford a half-disme...the half dime is what you buy

CucumborCucumbor Posts: 135 ✭✭✭

Hi there,

No lies, I'm not the one who bids 40 000+ USD on a half-disme (Yeah, I bet the "s" makes it all)
But I've just acquired a modest, yet attractive (to my low ball US collection) 1841O seated liberty half dime

Would you give it a F12 ? or VF 20 details ?

Anyway, whatever the grade I like it, hope you do too
Thanks for looking

    1841-o V-1 VF-details, R-4.
It's getting close to EF-details because half the leaf details are visible.
But it's worn a fair bit on the o and central letters in HALF DIME.
V-1 due to date position (pendant above right edge of 4 upright) and lack of reverse cracks.

For VF I like to see the scroll edges (where LIBERTY is) raised above the shield, check.
For F the scroll is pretty flat and the letters are barely all visible.

1841-o is not a commonly seen date. And usually they are seen on ebay in pretty low grades (AG, G).

Thanks for such a detailed review, I learn a lot here :)

Disme is pronounced the same as dime. The "s" is a silent letter and was dropped after a while.

It’s long been my understanding that “disme” rhymes with “steam.” It’s “deem.”:

Thanks for the indication. I had guessed that already as we have numerous words in french that have lost an "s" on the way

Here's my own picture of the coin, now that I've had a chance (and time) to shoot my own. I quite like the toning to it

    I think it's pronounced - "Nice Coin" -

Very Fine 25 details IMO. Shame about the rim ding.

That's a nice looking coin, and I think the details are much more Choice VF / Almost EF

I agree with everything @yosclimber said, except

"But it's worn a fair bit on the o and central letters in HALF DIME."

That, to me, looks to be striking weakness ... hence my take on the grade.
