Why we slab $6 coins... Show me yours

yspsalesyspsales Posts: 2,526 ✭✭✭✭✭

A recent discussion made me think of this thread.

Mostly for my enjoyment and OCD, but feel many need to be preserved for future numistmatists...

Bought an entire album of these and finally got around to slabbing a few... avg cost $4 per coin

I've wondered about this myself. There were times I've waited 2 months or more for submissions to return of legitimate collector coins. While waiting I'll look at "Shared Submissions" and see bulk orders of really worthless modern coins (that should all be MS 69 or MS 70 just based upon current Mint practices) taking up time to grade. What a waste of time and money.

At least the coin you've posted has some actual collector interest and value potential.

I didn't slab this one but someone did. I ended up setting it free from the slab and using it for my album.

    I don’t.

Those bulk submissions slow things down...and help bring the cost down for everyone else.

@yspsales the coins you have posted are not $6 coins and have nothing in common with what was discussed in that other thread. These may have only cost you $6 or less, however I'm very sure that you were able to recover your grading fees + when you sold any. That is far different than slabbing a coin that is worth less than the costs to slab.

there are tons of reasons people do things that have nothing to do with economics.

i have a lot of 'cheap' modern coins slabbed because the grading cost is irrelevant to me, but the satisfaction i get from my type set being in uniform holders matters to me. isnt OCD wonderful.

Good points in your questioning as to
"why?" A famous saying comes to mind.
"To each his/her own". As to your first question. I do BOTH. Lol.

This coin may have been in a H. E. Harris & Co. coin holder. I bought one of these for my silver proof state quarters and the coins have toned in vivid colors.

Collecting coins is a hobby for many, a business for some. As a hobby, collectors can do as they wish - slab or not. As a business, it is a profit/loss decision. Cheers, RickO

So since I'm here, let me ask the question. Should I get these guys slabbed?... Or is it just damage?

Very awesome, dude! To me, they look ok?
Very attractive, to say the least. Are they full bands? If they are, they might be considered? I like 'em. <3B)
That is entirely up to you, my friend. Just as the thread states. "You can DO whatever you wish!" :D

No, never checked if they're FB. I doubt if they are. I should probably check though.

    Thanks!

So I'm just guessing here. If this had been a FB, would this have killed it?

Not a $6 coin, but this is probably the lowest value coin I’ve ever sent in... And I did it for the tarnish. :D

Needed for a registry type set to keep it at 100% complete. When I was dealer, I could barely get $5 for a four piece set of Proof dollar coins.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

    That coin is exceptional!!

Later day proof coins have never sold well, even in higher grade status. I really do like the Proof golden dollars, but it seems that there is not a market for them.

I get doing it for low cost MS coins and toned coins, but I still shake my head when I see something like a slabbed F-12 1936 half dollar or a VG-10 1919 cent (I've actually seen stuff like this). That must be the OCD part, maybe it's for a slabbed set. Hey, I might not do that, but it's not taking anything away from my collection either.

This has a value of zero in 64rb.

MS66 taste on an MS63 budget.

Well, here's an example of my total inexperience and how it could (I guess) happen to others! I submitted 3 coins like this about 10 years ago. Basically, testing my non-professional grading skills. The other 2 came back in a body bags! I learned the hard lesson!

    Ouch!!
