For all my non-detector friends here, good update to enjoy

Just realized I wanted to share this recently dug coin with those who don't get dirty like me. What you see is fresh out of the ground and after an acetone dip. First CBH for me. Enjoy. Peace Roy

I haven't detected in a few years but a find like that would certainly bring the bug back. Amazing find. Congrats!
The whole worlds off its rocker, buy Gold™.

Backyard of a stone house circa 1820. Also dug a brass trigger guard for a Pa. style muzzleloader-flintlock. Peace Roy

Nice find, keep on looking Roy.
Nice one!
Wow, that's in amazing condition. How deep was she buried? Any ideas as to how the coin doesn't appear to show any environmental damage?
Great find, Roy.
Keep swingin' that coil.
Incredible find - way to go! I imagine it helps to know where to look as much as expertise with the detector.

Wow, that's nice! I've never found anything remotely this old. Here in Georgia the laws are very restrictive. If someone asks me where they are allowed to dig, my answer is," If it's a good place, it's off-limits. If it ain't worth digging, knock yourself out!"
Great find. > @Namvet69

Kennedys are my quest...
That was a ton of money back in the day. Whoever lost it might have had some explaining to do.
Yikes. My house is circa 1780. I'd better get a metal detector!
Nice finds.
Are you sure it was only an acetone dip? I think I see some hairlines on the obverse. Maybe from brushing the fresh dirt away?
Awesome. Way Awesome.
Appears someone rubbed some dirt off before the dip..........hairlines do not help.
But, I'd be excited too!

It's a given that a coin coming out of the ground has hairline scratches. I accept that but I don't add to that reality. Thanks for the comments. Peace Roy

Congrats! Nice find.
Nice coin. Great find. I'd be checking the walls and footings around that house and any masonry or rock walls around the house even though they are stone. People did some amazing things to hide money back then. Congrats!

How long are you detecting?
I started in 1998, and haven't been lucky enough to find a Bustie

@Treashunt So I began around 1991-92. Bought my first machine, a Whites XLT, which was their high end general unit at that time. Great machine, deep penetration, very accurate, lots of killer finds at 9"+ inches although I did have to work for them. Fast forward to 2015, after a long day of digging, I backed my truck over it and squished it dead. Moved to an AT Pro, another great machine, excellent iron elimination and discrimination, very accurate, waterproof, I'm everywhere and I'm sneaking up on 72 in Sept. Life is good. Have a good day.

@JedPlanchet A big part is practicing with all sorts of known metal objects, in the beginning I dug everything to understand the item signatures. And I am pretty thorough. Land research of all sorts is illuminating. I am grateful to have met nice people who gave allowed me on their properties. Peace Roy

@mark_dak About 6" in dark loamy soil. There was nothing above it to mask the signature. Me thinks no chemicals applied to the ground. Peace Roy

Awesome find!
That’s pretty cool ! Makes me what to go detecting and dig up my own treasures 👍
Nice find dude! Congrats! That doesn’t happen everyday.
Why do you say that? Ground itself will not scratch the coin. I have a friend that detects for coins and he carries a little 4oz bottle (like the ones you use to spray your glasses for cleaning) and it works like a champ.
be well, be safe.

Nice! I live about 10 miles from a colonial settlement and should probably start looking in the fields close by with my Spectra V3i. I have found a colonial copper in the woods behind my house, if only there were more time in the day...
@jessewvu you've got a nice machine, do yourself a favor and get out there. The hunt continues. Peace Roy

@AUandAG the act of digging up the soil to dislodge a coin is in itself an abrasive action. I don't clean dirt off coins in the field. If it's a nice find, I fold it into a couple of squares of TP to isolate it until I get home. No idea how much thaw and heave there is over time. Thanks for your comments. Peace Roy

Wow! Very cool!
I got the XLT when they first came out, loved that machine.
I wore it out and got another one.
Love Whites, it is a shame that they went out of business.
Great service, great machines.

Hi all! I went back to try and find the rest of the muzzleloader after a half inch rain. No dice, dug lots of cut nails, copper flashing snipoffs, old strap hinges, a 1937 merc and finally another exciting coin. My first evero 1875-s twenty cent coin! I am thrilled even though it took all day. The obv is worn but the rev is better. The mm looked thick vertically so I read a great research site called doubledimes.com by Brunner and Frost. What a thorough study they did and it's free online to boot. This 1875-s is dbl mm Rev-D, date right, 8 low in denticles, BF-2 level date Obv-2. Enjoy. Peace Roy
Got a wonderful reply from Brunner and Frost that I thought everyone would enjoy. Made my research worthwhile and an attribution from the experts.
"Hi Roy, that's quite a find! Did you say you dug it up? Found with a metal detector? If so, it's in really good shape considering it was underground!
Looking at the various images, you have the BF-14. The digit top matches what we have called the Misplaced 1, although we are rethinking it could be a very different die state of one of the two misplaced 8s. However, it is a definite match to the BF-14, possibly with the beginnings of some of the earliest die cracks at the base of the date.
The reverse is Reverse I of BF-14, where the mintmark has a different tilt than found on the other dies, including Reverse D.
Congratulations on the find, and glad you got the interest in the book and the research. Thanks for sharing with us!
- John and Lane"

Gentlemen,
I just dug an 1875-s 20¢ coin and noticed that the mm was thick vertically. This lead me to your work on this denomination. I thoroughly appreciate your efforts, which allowed me to identify particular markers to categorize this coin correctly.
BF-2 level date Obv 2, date right, NJ - Rev D, 8 low in denticles #2. Thanks. Peace Roy
