    I like the first set of pics best. The second set makes the piece look like it’s been bathed in iodine.

    I don't think the coin is circulated, what I think people are seeing is a weak strike. If it was circulation, there would be more marks in the field and I just don't see that...but the pics could be hiding some marks.

    To me, this is a hard call. On the obverse, I see what may be discoloration on the check, the top part of the hair, and the top part of the feathers and this discoloration might indicate wear. There are similar spots on the reverse. However, the discoloration might just be part of the (attractive!) toning and the fields look very, very clean. I guess I'll go with the fields to guess MS65.

    My first thought was AU55. I also have a tendency to undergrade gold.

    A very nice AU58.

    I don’t see this one in an MS holder, even considering the “market grading” shift that has become well-established now. The wear around the wreath is just too evident.

    I feel the need to remind people that you’re looking at a picture at least 20 times larger than the item really is.

    I’d go so far as to say the vast majority of people couldn’t see, or wouldn’t care about, the so-called wear everyone is talking about.

    Get the big picture and stop micograding.

    Then again, I’m probably all wet.

    I was at 63 until I spotted the mottled look on the neck below the ear. Still a beautiful coin.

    I'm at 63 - the "wear" at hair and ear is not IMO, but rather soft strike and oxidation of the lesser struck parts. The denticles are superb and see no real wear, the fields very nice. This is true of the leaves and reverse. Denticles on obv. softly struck at 6 o'clock.

    MS-63 in the holder, AU-58 outside of it.

    Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

    Nice coin for sure, I like it!

    Grade wise ... really a tough call. Excludingthe possibility of "plus" grades, my guesses, in order, would be MS63, AU58, MS62 or MS64

    Good comment. I just pulled out my MS64 (which looks great in hand), and I can't even get a photo of it that looks as good as the OP's coin.

    I am not surprised. I think we tend overall to be a bit conservative on these boards as would likely be understandable.

    Great to get educated. Hard to tell the diff between wear vs weak strike or some other color difference. I guessed "AU64" being that I couldnt tell the diff. I can easily see it at 65 if luster is better than I perceived.

    Tough to grade fron pictures, thanks for the lesson!

    The main thing I think you all are seeing is a slightly weak strike combined with slightly different toning on different elevations of the coin. If I had to guess, I would guess this coin was stored in an envelope for ages. Areas in contact with the envelope toned differently than areas not in contact with it for various reasons.

    Congrats on the coin. I was on the fence for a guess of 64 and went 63+. Should have stuck with my initial thought. Being one grade off isn't too bad (when viewing photos).
