1845-O Quarter Eagle Sells for $117k

This coin sold last night for a record price for the date. It was in an OGH and graded MS63 by our hosts. It looks like a very nice coin. The strike and color are outstanding from the images. It's not a record for the type. I believe an 1846-O sold for 132k out for the Pittman auction back in 1998 which is really astounding.
I wasn't expecting the coin to bring over $100k but wow! The market is strong for top pop interesting coins like the 1845-O QE. Congrats to the new owner.

@earlyAurum....Wow.... That is a heck of a sale. I did not watch this.. Was the bidding active with several bidders, or just two with excess testosterone? Cheers, RickO
What a strong price! I think the price reflects that lib quarter eagles have become more popular to collect and this is a key date that is very rare in unc. Congrats to the new owner
Ba-onkers. Great date!

I recall thinking $8,800 was a lot when auctioned in the November 1983 Bowers and Merena Virgil M. Brand Collection Part 1.
Their description of it as the finest known has held up so far.
Here is the page with the lot 1983 listing:

And the just sold lot listing:

Also has a "Coins In Motion" video linked in the above listing:

Not only is this a great result, this is the 3rd Virgil Brand coin that has just broken records.

This sold for $117K on a PCGS Price Guide price of just $55K!
If the Pittman coin sold for more, what record did this Brand coin break?
My experience is that rare lib quarter eagles trade so infrequently that the price guide for these coins are of little help. I have made what I thought were very strong bids at auction on condition census rare date lib quarter eagles (i.e. 50-75% higher than the record price) only to find I'm not even the underbidder.
One way to think of this is that this coin is only worth 2.1 Bitcoin, and the 1822 HE is only worth 153 Bitcoin.
Strong price, but I like seeing a QE from the 1840’s do well. Mintage and survival #’s are pretty low on almost all of them.
Wonder if DWN picked it up for a client

Im wondering if there are going to be price adjustments in TPG Price Guides soon. We can only hope.
