1839 Capped Bust Half Dollar

I’m thinking about getting this one. I don’t currently have anything capped bust...
What do you all think? It’s $225 if I want it...
very accurate pictures!
I find it’s surfaces to be exceptional. I’m curious what our bust half collectors and specialists think...

That's a beauty! I'm no expert on Capped Bust Halves, but that one looks to me to be original, and you are so right about the surfaces. I'd certainly grab it.

It's okay but not making me feel warm or fuzzy.
It's a good one year type with the reverse of seated half eagle.
I wish it was a bit darker as my gut says this has been lightened.
I like the look but would expect next to no mint luster for the XF40 grade. Still, I'd take dark & dirty over hairlined and clean looking from circulation swipes.

I'd never learn to like the hit on the cheek although I'm not familiar enough with series values to say if it's a good deal or not.

I think you can do better in the XF40 grade the surfaces are a bit dark and almost appear slightly granular. Look for lighter color and smoother skin. You can find them in that price point with a little effort. Just my opinion of course, its a B-/C coin in my scale I find darker coins are more difficult to resell. Good luck! Great series to collect. Date sets can be fun on a moderate budget.
I like that coin and that date, as I prefer first and last year’s of issue, here’s mine:
Everyone seems to have different tastes. That happens to be the look I love on early silver!
I ended up getting it, I like the coin.
Thanks for the replies. 👍

I like the coin very much and don't think it has been lightened. In my opinion, it just got dark the way it got dark and that might not be the way every coin ages, but it is the way some of them age.

Wow, some tough responses. I like the coin. The reeded edge series as a whole is tough to find coins without some noticeable problems. This one is a nice one though!

Nice.
Fair price, and it screams originality to me.
So much Bust material has been played with. This one looks great. Pull the trigger.

I was going to say buy it also. Looks original to me.
I really like the capped bust half, would gladly spring for that one. Nice original look to me.

Looks nice to me.

Looks good from here. Would look much better without a slab.
Two year type - 1838 & 1839.
There's tons of history here. Nice coins.
Really a good look for that grade range. The word wholesome comes to mind.

I like the circam look on old silver.... Nice coin(s)... Cheers, RickO
Nice looking coin. I am leery of Bust material in non-PCGS holders, especially if unstickered (often times there is a reason). Examine the coin carefully to ensure its originality.

Okay I rolled out of bed on the other side this morning and turned on the TV. The Crepe Erase infomercial with Jane Seymour & Dorothy Hamill was on which made me rethink how differently everything ages. So now I'll agree with @TomB on liking this 1839 half
I would grade it VF-30 or 35. It's not an EF to me, but my standards are based on the ANA book which seems to be out of date these days when it comes to the circulated grades.
One of the cornerstones to learning how to grade coins is to get an imprint of the detail of a Mint State coin into your mind. As you go down the circulated coin grading scale, more detail is lost. An EF-40 with have a great deal of the micro detail, but no mint luster. I think that the OP coin has too much missing detail to be an EF. Here is an 1838, which has the same design in MS-62.
I like the look of it a lot!
The draped half is also very nice.
Congrats on the purchase!
Thanks everybody! I am happy with them.

I really like the look of both coins .
I like the OP's coin, all other opinions don't matter.
Any 1839 bust half dollar must have a reeded edge. Otherwise it's fake for sure.
