Crossing a Proof

daltexdaltex Posts: 3,486 ✭✭✭✭✭

I have a proof coin in an NGC holder that I would prefer to have in PCGS plastic. I'm not concerned with the numerical grade, but I don't want to lose the Cameo distinction. Is it possible to request a cross at any grade but only if it remains a cameo?

I don't think I've ever done that specific thing, but writing "PR01CAM" in the minimum grade would probably accomplish that.

    Or just confuse them...

Here's a fun question: if it won't cross as a cameo, is it actually a cameo?

It likely depends on the coin. 😉

Or even more likely, who's looking at it. ;)

In theory, PCGS will contact the submitter if/when they are confused. It might be safer to (also) write it in longhand on the submission form: "Cross at any CAM grade; do not cross without CAM".

    Thank you. I'll try that.

Update: coin did not cross. Very glad not to lose the designation.

Thanks for the update. You were smart to keep the designation.

It was actually a UCAM, so yes.

Show us a picture of both sides of the coin and we will give you an honest reply to it being a cameo or not.

Looks ultra to me, although I'm not well versed in modern coins

The reverse looks borderline for a UCAM. Obverse is very strong. Attractive coin overall.

You did the right thing. No way would that dcam at PCGS.
