Anyone had to get a call from eBay with a PIN number to buy something?

I just bought a 1/4 oz Gold Eagle and had to get a call from eBay with a PIN number to complete the purchase. Never had that happen before. Is this something to do with managed payments?

Interesting....haven't heard of that requirement nor have I ever been asked to do so.
Where you using someone else's computer? Sounds like an IP address issue. eBay verifying it's you and not a spammer making the pruchase.
I have had it happen a few times on larger purchases.
Actually I did just buy a new computer,,,,,, maybe that is why?
Just happened to me yesterday. They sent me a code and I entered it and purchase moved on

It has happened to me on a few occasions.
I've never had that happen, but I do have 2-factor authentication turned on, so any time I log in from any device, I get a text with a code I have to input.
I tried to snipe an expensive coin and did not have enough time to respond with the code
Nothing to do with managed payments. That has always been a "thing". Fraud prevention.

well, that is a different animal altogether. a code to complete a bid vs complete a purchase.
i appreciate security as much as the next person but at some point it becomes inane. i seriously have to confirm the 3 images just to LOG OUT sometimes. smh - i do concede it seems to happen with firefox and not chrome. i refuse to accept Edge exists yet.
perhaps we need to post some ebay generic links so we all can check the purchase options and various factor login/purchase/sell options.
if i lose an auction because it wont even accept a (reasonable) bid, i'm not going to be a happy camper.
Been there! It's always certain sellers too. I think it's something in their settings.

happened to me numerous times.
I’m not affluent enough for that to have ever happened to me. Interesting to know it happens to those with deep pockets though. 🤑

please specify. it happens when you make a "certain" bid or just to make the payment?
this could hurt sellers and buyers and kill future transactions. figuring out what triggers it and how to appropriately handle it is moving rapidly up my list. to lose a great item because of such a triviality makes me a bit nauseous as i know what can go into finding that just-right item(s).

i've been at a shop before and unintentionally exceeded my banks comfort level with one of their cards and when the lady i've done business with on MANY occasions informed me, i think i went pale for a few seconds.
to me it was a rather nice lot of coins and to think they'd have to sit there while i untangled how i didn't have enough money as i thought i did, (although it was just a transaction limit lifted with a simple phone call), would be nearly unbearable as i travel a lot for all shops i visit. - don't always have that option vis a vis the internet. i can think of another coin, this one online that would have netted $2.5k profit plus be a big confidence booster, missed by literally 1-2 seconds as a bin and the screen changed as my mouse was gunning down the bin button.
I've had it happen a few times. Once, this extra process slowed me down enough that I missed sniping a coin that I wanted. It appears to be random and I couldn't detect any pattern.

was this a special 1/4 oz gold or an under $500 purchase?
Over $500
I have paypal setup with double security. Anytime I buy with paypal, I log-in and then they text me a pin number to verify it is me making the purchase regardless of the amount. Last year, someone hacked my paypal and used my info to pay for stuff elsewhere. Went thru crap to get it all fixed.

I have not purchased from ebay this year... and that issue did not occur for me on any items last year. Glad I read this thread, because if it had happened to me, I likely would have just cancelled the purchase, since it would have been out of the standard process. Always cautious when dealing on the internet. Cheers, RickO

Sounds like a good time to seek some funding from PayPal and others to start a worldwide coinbay done right?!

When you bid. In one specific example, there was a variety priced about under 50% of market value. I went to snipe and got the message and the auction ended before I could do the pin code. It actually went unsold, thankfully, and I was prepared next time it came around and won the coin. I think other bidders ran into the issue as well. This is why I think its something to do with certain sellers. Also, the bid price was about 600 bucks.

As if I didn't need another reason not to list auctions on eBay.
As I think about it I recently had a snipe not go thru and it said "not placed in time". Never had that happen before, I wonder if the PIN Code might have caused it?
pin code issue? did it ask you to receive a call to get a pin ?
Yes, a text on the BIN but not on the snipe,,,,,, not sure if the snipe is related to the code?
sounds like the snipe was something else, like the "post back" for the bid was delayed enough on your side to not make it to the ebay server
I have dealt with this too. I contacted eBay. This happened on items that were listed in the bullion category. According to eBay, bullion items are the most common for fraudulent activity.

It has killed some of my snipes, too. It pretty much eliminates snipe programs for anything over about $500 (I haven't figured out the exact amount). It used to be around $1000, but I just got dinged on two snipes for items that sold for around $610 (a minute apart).

This makes total sense. Thank you for sharing this info.

By screwing up the snipers this feature hurts sellers. I wonder if they are doing this to discourage sniping.
