    Here's a pair of raw 3 Cent Silvers; 1853 on the Left, 1852 on the Right. The crusty 1853 spent some years developing that toning in an old old wood clock case (Chauncey Jerome 30hr Ogee. Circa 1850).

    Here are two political tokens from the 1860 presidential campaign. for Stephen Douglas. The DeWitt / Sullivan number is SD 1860-22.

    This first one is in copper. The dies were cut by George Lovette of New York City. The reported mintage was 72 pieces in copper.

    This one is made of silver. This piece was made for collectors. The mintage was reported to be 20 pieces in silver.

    The message on the reverse is "Intervention is disunion ... M.Y.O.B," which stands for "Mind Your Own Business." This was message to the abolitionists. Douglas based his campaign on the concept of popular sovereignty, which allowed the voters in the states and territories to decide if they wanted to allow slavery in their area.

    I usually don't collect off-medals, but when I had the chance to buy the silver piece without spending a fortune, I took advantage of it. You can't own too many things with a mintage of 20 without breaking the bank.

    The pieces in white metal are the most common with a mintage of 250.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
