Trade Dollar NEWP - "Original"? Leather Pouch Toning? Like or Dislike? (Update - Video added)
Welcome to my new piece. I'm a type collector and saw this TD as an opportunity to fill this slot. I like the reverse design on this issue, not so much the obverse. What attracted me to the piece was the "original" looking surfaces and that the look was distinctive from other typical gray versions.
Do you like the darker chestnut toning or does this one make you hold your nose? Many TDs did see overseas duty so I'm guessing long ago that this coin was kept in a leather pouch to produce its color.
The pics are a little misleading in that the coin has proof like surfaces readily viewed on the obverse.
Edited for video with grade reveal. A picture of this coin can only show so much. Video shown in indirect sunlight, direct sunlight, and halogen light. Like it any better?:

I am not much into dark toning, but I do like that piece. I would guess AU58?
I like it, but can absolutely understand how others might not be so inclined. This is the type of coin I consider "handsome" vs "gorgeous".

I have always been a fan of this kind of color.

58 details but I gotta penalize the toning so 55 net
seems to be a fairly well struck example... congrats. Finding TDs with the right look is usually a challenge... I suspect that is why I only own 4 and 3 are chop marked.

I would rather see the coin in hand before opining on originality. I do like the coin.

I'm on the dislike side of neutral regarding the toning. It somewhat obscures the design, at least in the photos. Maybe I'd like it more in hand.
I like it
Most of "the market" will not like the toning.
I like dark toning on trade dollars, so I like this one.
Mr_Spud
I like the look of it.
The toning camouflages the coin a bit, so it's going to be perceived as borderline negative. I don't hate the toning, but I'd like a non-toned or evenly toned coin with the same wear better. AU55.

I tend to like dark toning more than most. I think that, in this case, it actually adds depth to the details.
Your observation was similar to what I saw when deciding to buy the coin.

I like it . I am also in search of that elusive and pleasing TD for the type set.

I wouldn't have a problem owning that coin.
I like it. Its not easy to find trades in circulated grades with original surfaces. The vast majority of circulated T$1's are washed out or dipped.
55-58. While I kind of like it, it’s not one I could see buying, but pay no attention to the guy behind the curtain buying gold.
Video added in first post.

It looks even nicer in the video 👍🏻
Mr_Spud
Totally agree!
Much nicer
I truly like the coin and the toning.

Works for me! I'm a "strike" guy and yours is very well struck. I was going to say 58 at first, but then I saw the video which only confirmed my thoughts. And CAC to boot!

I like it. I don't care too much for ~ 150 year old silver coins that are blast white.
I love all trade dollars. That one is easy to love and the video shows why first glance off photos can be tough. Well bought Catbert

I really like that one. I think I can see all the beads on the tiara, all the stars are sharp, as well as the feathers on the eagle's left leg. I enjoy that kind of toning and how it sets off the design, and your gif shows how the reflective surfaces add flash and bump the eye appeal up a notch. I don't think you could do much better for type! 76P is a better date/mm with <0.5M struck.
I like it.
Yep. About as original as original skin gets in my book. The video sold me on it, nice luster and color underneath!

I would be extremely proud to own that coin, in my opinion it is in the 95th percentile of Trade Dollars for that date/MM + grade.
The vast majority of Trade Dollars even up to the MS64 grade level are merely "market acceptable" and are incredibly unattractive, either washed out from dipping, previously cleaned and retoned, or otherwise imperfect.
My only comment if I were to nit-pick would be that I wish the coin had more luster on the obverse, but as you mentioned it's quite PL so that is not unexpected.
I like it, especially the grade...CAC does not hurt either!
I wonder what it would look like through Phil's lens?

Thanks for the video, @Catbert. Makes a world of difference. I was on the fence until then. Very nice.

Based on just the photo, I'd pass, but it looks better in the video.
That's an awesome piece.

Coin looks great in the video. I like it.
It is a nice 58 TD.... Not one I would pick, but certainly not bad.... Cheers, RickO
Love clean coins without toning but this is a great piece. Be proud to own it and congratulations on the pick up. Thanks for sharing.
To mention a few of the comments above, the toning may obscure a bit of the detail the coin does have but looking at your video, something tells me it looks better in hand than a picture can offer.
That's awesome!

Based on the video, I like it. The still images don't do the coin justice.
Not usually partial to dark toning but this one intrigues me.
Very natural looking and rather acceptable.

Hey @Catbert ... would you please quit showing people what those old crusty coins, that kinda look flat and dingy in their regular photographs, really look like in hand?!?!!
Dangit dude, like we need more competition!!!
Great coin! Lovely example!!
