scam alert on eBay

A zero feedback seller has this listed on eBay:

The auction title is "1896-O MORGAN S$1 PCGS MS 64 Rare" and one of his item specifics says:
Certification Number: 39031295

The coin pictured in the listing was also “sold” by the seller last month. He had a non-matching cert number listed then, as well, but the listing showed the entire grading label.

Happens to me all the time. Sometimes I just forget to change the cert number in the field of one of my own listings when I'm doing multiple listings. Sometimes I forget to change the date or the type.

As you say, it is only a scam if the seller doesn't have the coin in hand. It is suspicious that they have zero feedback and the 1st coin they sell is a 5 figure coin. But stranger things have happened.

What’s your “really?” asking? His listing includes a picture of an MS64 and while it’s a real long shot, he could have the pictured coin, but listed the cert number incorrectly. See the post two above this one for innocent examples of that, even by an experienced seller.

No, whatever the cert number is of the actual coin he has...assuming he has one at all. He did allegedly have and sell one a couple of weeks ago. My guess is it is that same coin image and he cropped the image. That one was cert number 4987427

eBay removed the listing.

I'll tell you what's weird. The seller has been an eBay member since 2017 and has zero feedback as either a buyer or seller.

LOL. Fair enough. Of course, why would he bother with lowly MS62 coins.

OT but I did know a guy who for years was an 1893-S Morgan $ specialist. He'd go to shows and all he had was a case full of 1893-S Morgan $s. Later, he branched out a bit and had other dates as well. But I remember him in those early years, sitting at that table at our local show with 10 or 12 1893-S $s in the center of a case. LOL. Just waiting for that one big spender. Nice portable inventory!
