After 15 years, thanks to Mr Mark Feld (when he was a dealer), of holding onto this wonderful coin, I have decided to let it go to a new home. One that, while I think I had a great home for it, is even better suited.

I won't say "how much".
I won't say "who".
I will say, the person who approached me on this coin said they had seen it on coinfacts some years back and then it stayed in their mind....to the point that they recently started tracking it down online (they aren't a member here they told me), and ultimately it led them to me...I applaud that.

I received an unsolicited email offer but wasn't ready to sell. We had some very nice discussions over a period of time. I could tell that the coin would mean a lot to this person, to their collection, etc. I know it had meant a lot to me. I also thought "what if I die early? Would my son appreciate it the same way I/new owner would" My wife? What is the best thing to do in that instance?"

Ultimately, I couldn't say "no" any longer and, while I WILL SEVERELY miss this coin (I consider it unique due to the natural toning), I am ok with parting with it. It was a combination of the sale plus where it will be going. I can honestly say, had I not seen the registry set it will go along with, nor had the person been so very personable/friendly/and obviously a great collector type of person, then I would still be holding onto it.

Some folks here have come to know me and this coin. I have shown this coin to local non-collectors and they can see why it is special...add the toning and it is even moreso.

So, thank you, Mark and thank you everyone who has ever commented on the coin. I've appreciated it. I have coins "worth" more, by dollar amount, but no coins worth more when it comes to pure enjoyment when holding/viewing (and that includes my 1793 1/2c that has to have had some real history behind it).

I do apologize to anyone that was interested in it as well, but, trust me, very few collectors (none of whom expressed a desire to buy), could have come to the sale and none would have done it. The new owner (I'll be sending it out within a week) is someone who wanted it and it truly belongs with them and their collection.

So, goodbye to "my" 1955 DDO Lincoln Cent....beautiful and uniquely toned (find another 55DDO like it....), and a centerpiece to any collection.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

    Actually, Mark is right, AND, your last post is correct as well.

    I AM going to miss the coin, but I did make peace with it before I agreed to sell it to the buyer.....for many of the reasons in the OP.....the buyer presented themselves in a great way to me, and I appreciated it. I do think the coin will be in a great home and I did have it for 15 of it's 65 years in existence. Not too shabby, imho.

    I would be remorseful if I had sold it to a flipper or a dealer who just saw profits and wouldn't actually enjoy the coin the way I had.

    I've had that happen more than once in my life. I really bond with my pets and have lost cats that got me through high school/military/college and the moves associated within that time.

    Losing my pets is very painful but not something I see myself posting for. This is, after all, while a community of people that become very familiar to each other, still a coin forum and, as such, unless my pets had an important role in my coin collecting, I wouldn't be posting about them here. My mother did, my grandmother did, my pets haven't. My sports teams haven't.

    This coin, though, was something I thought others could appreciate as well as appreciate letting go of a "forever" coin....

    Am glad you shared your story here. We are all temporary custodians and you had the good fortune to select the next owner on your terms.

    Might I suggest you get your coin's photograph blown up and then framed so you can have it in your study as a pleasant reminder of a great example of numismatic history? I had Todd do that for me with my A&R half and this has added to my hobby enjoyment.

    I am glad you sold this coin to someone who really wants it and glad you got 15
    years to enjoy it. These coins are the kings of the Lincoln series.

    Unless you plan on dying with them, you'll see them all go away someday. Much better to send it to someone who will enjoy it than just liquidate it to the "the masses" at auction or through a consignment. If you do die with them, your heirs will not do as well disposing of them as you would have, no matter how carefully you plan it out.

    Sometimes the time is "right" and it's better to let them go. I've sold a few truly nice ones over the years and I don't really miss them or even think of them much.

    ....and that was the crux of my internal argument once the person made their initial unsolicited offer....and why, after initially declining and then having multiple discussions about the coin with them, I finally decided to sell to them. A few others were interested, but, there were multiple reasons why this person "won" (and, what I didn't want to happen was for it to be a 'bidding war'....it wasn't just about the money to me, by a longshot...though, it obviously was part of the equation).

    This is interesting to me since, often times people just sell through consignment. The situation here is obviously an exception here but how many coins can you place like this?

    Did Pogue's sales before or after his passing do better?
